Amber teething necklaces and sleeping.

I just asked this question on fb and got mixed responses, so I thought I'd put it here too. Do you leave your child's amber teething necklace on while they are sleeping? If yes, at what age and what did you do?

One person who said no I wouldn't take parenting advice from in a blue fit, but the other was a BB girl I certainly would and do listen to...so, what's the go with necklaces and sleeping?

ETA FAR OUT! The chick I would never take advice from (gives her babies coke etc etc) has just said to me, "you only get one chance". Condescending a-hole. Anyway, back to the topic lol!

I put DS2 necklace on when he was 5mths and haven't taken it off. It did occur to me it might be a hazzard, but I tried it on his ankle and it just kept on coming off and if I kept on putting it on and off I would eventually forget to put it back on and it would be useless. So I left it on. It has been safe on him so far...I tuck it into his singlet and pj's (a bonds jumpsuit most nights). It hasn't ever fallen off and if it breaks, it's individually knotted one so the beads are less likely to fall off.

I leave mine on DD2. Since she was 5months old I would put in on her ankle, then I just kept forgetting to swap in from neck to ankle and now it just stays there. DD2 actually plays with it till she falls asleep, she does not pull at it, just rolls it in her little fingers. If it is not on she grabs at her neck looking for it.

like i said earlier iz has had hers on since 8 weeks and it hasnt come off her. i reckon she'd look funny with it off!

I started off putting it around DS's ankle everytime I put him down, but it was such a PITA and always seemed to come off.

In the end I decided to just leave it on while he slept. I figured he always slept in his cot and there was absolutely nothing in there that it could get caught on, so it didn't represent a strangling risk. Also, they are designed to break when under pressure, so there is already a very low strangling risk. If it did break then the beads were individually knotted. If he did end up swallowing the one that came loose, they are so small that they would just pass right through. From memory DS was about 5 or 6 months at this stage and he continued to wear it 24/7 up until recently.

Same here. Pie got hers at around 8 months, it probably hasn't been off her for at least 12 months now.

We used to take it off for baths & hair washes too but one night it got left off by mistake (didn't go back on after the bath) - it was off for 24 hours all up - never again!

Haven't read through all... cos well... I'm being lazy lol...

I have left Elijah's on since he got it... hmmm I think he was around 8 months old? It's on all the time, swimming, bathing, sleeping etc. Most of them I think use the same screw clasp? Those are designed to break under too much pressure... secondly, the size of these necklaces are quite small and to hook onto something would be a fairly difficult feat, especially in a cot where there isn't anything I can think of that it could get hooked on.

DD1 was 4 months when i put hers on and it has never been taken off since (she's just over 2.5yrs now) apart from giving it a clean. DD2 has had hers on since she was 3 months when she got her first two teeth

if you're concerned about a choking hazard you could opt for an amber bracelet/anklet?

I used one with DD and she always wore it. The few times it did come off I just found it in her clothes.

I did think about this but then went "what the hell, that's why I have a monitor." We got onto this late, DD started at 14 months. DH actually got her up from her sleep this week and it had come off, she does like to chew on it atm. But no biggie, he just put it back on her.

I have have not taken DS2 off from the day he got it around 4months....for all the reasons already mentioned. He still has it on almost 2yrs old.

We put DD2s on when she was about 4.5 months old and have never taken it off. not for baths, not for sleep, not for anything!

I tend to leave it on DS (can't remember when he started wearing his) and I had to take it off when he was in the baby room at CC - they were worried about it; if I didn't take it off they would during the day. Now DS's in the toddler room it stays on (except for swimming and bath time). Mind you we're on our 3rd necklace - the first one broke at CC in the baby room even though it was individually knotted I think I lost a couple and the second one has a magnetic clasp - DS kept pulling it off. Th current one is one amber bead short now near the clasp as DS decided to chew on it while we were in driving around Qld last holidays - thought he was going to sleep but no he was chewing away at his beads . Now we keep more of an eye out for that (have a baby rear view mirror in our cars - didn't in the hire car we had) and remove it from his mouth when he starts that now. I think he was also bored at the time as we'd been in the car driving a lot

With DD we leave the necklace around her neck for day sleeps, but wrapped it around her ankle (under a sock usually) for the night. This is what we did with DS too, until he got to about 18 months, then we just left it round his neck all the time.

I hardly take Amelia's off - only when she's going in water, because the thread can be weakened...
