DD2 has issues with the vaccuum, when she was really little she absolutely hated it. She is a bit better now, but will often scream for it to be turned off. She is one of the loudest kids I know. She is forever yelling and seems to like background noise. Likes the TV to be on, even if she is not watching it and needs music to go to sleep, not just peaceful music, but often dance.

my kids turn in to wild feral hyped up manics when the vacum is on . its like a zoo ! dunno what it is .

DD is petrifed of motorbikes . and DS cant stand certian music or sound , he will cry and cover his ears and say "turn it off mummy" . he goes from happy to freaked out in a slpit second , and recovers when its over .

i have tinnitus and loud sudden noises , or any loud noise at all , makes me act like a 3 yr old too

this is my own memory as a young child and i too was TERRIFIED of all loud noises...tv, radio, fast running taps, vacuum, lawnmower.

the things that i did to help was to go outside when the vacuum was on and ride my bike or dig in the sandpit (to try and block it out). or go into my room and close the door. i was still a bit like a cat on a hot tin roof, but it def helped calm me down.

babe...unfortunately i think it is just something that will take time for him to 'grow out of'. could you maybe get him some headphones and get him to watch a DVD??

also, another thing that made me particularly nervous about the vacuum was that my mum hated doing it! and thus, i hated it LOL!! so maybe your DH just LOVES doing the mowing LOL!
