    Question Autism?

Ok well most will now that my son has Adhd and ive been on quiet a little journey with him and also a mountain of ups and downs experimenting with everything and anything to bring my son back down to earth..

Well my son had a specialist appt again today he goes every 3-4 weeks due to his high active Adhd and tolerancy to medications and aggressive behaviour etc... could on with a huge list but wont make you read everything..
Anywhoo- we went today as my son has been on ritalin for the past 3 weeks and its been great for him for the 1 hr it lasts seriously no joke this kid is unbelievably highly tolerant to this stuff crazy i know!!
While conversating with the dr he was asking me a series of questions on what his like in his "hey hour" and i said he becomes settled but then becomes intreverted wont talk to many people, hides, and just becomes extrememly shy and i mean wont even look at me...
He had these issues before but the hyperactivity was masking it big time..
He also asked me about my sons capability in learning.. My sons speech is that of a 8 yr old he is the most well spoken 4 yr old i have ever met its clear and when it comes to big words he has mastered them.. even the specialist was extremely suprised by this he couldnt believe it.
When he asks my son about basic events eg. Queensland, Ds returns the comment of "its flooding up there its horrible" and what did you watch yesterday? " i watched a show on the documentaries channel and the elephant had a baby and it was pregnant for nearly 2 yrs" dont believe me? I dont even believe it.. I cant explain it the specialist said there is children with learning disablities and children that are off the radar smart in adhd and its very rare but the ones that are highly intelligent is a low percentage but my son seems to have picked it up..
Now to the downside.. when asked to count to 4 he cant do it.. just doesnt contemplate it he just doesnt seem to realise the value of numbers. When asked colours he has no idea at all he calls the sky gren and the grass black and a white paper pink.
Ask him to do his abc's nothing also..
Ask him to sing a nursery rhyme and he cant but ask him to sing a song off the radio and he will sing a michael jackson song completely..

Has anyone ever heard of this? seriously even the dr is stumped.. he has no idea...
He says my son has qualities a child with High Functioning Autism but his speech is impecable.. and his understanding in conversation is great..

Pls anyone HELP i feel like im just going in circles..

It certainly could be high functioning autism. Did he mention Aspergers syndrome to you? It runs in my family so I know a little bit about it. I was just reading on an Aspy blog today about an Aspy's memory. The guy described it as a filmographic memory, so they see things and then play it back in their minds and remember it all perfectly (like what he is seeing on TV and listening to on the radio). I do a similar thing with songs and numbers!

Hopefully this specialist will be able to give you lots of useful info. There is an Aspergers thread that you might find useful here: https://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums...atter-4-a.html

Wow he sounds like a very clever cookie!!!

A friend of my mum's has an Autistic son and he can tell you any AFL fact about Essendon since the team was formed and other trivial things that anyone else would need to research.

He is a very gifted musician also.

He is now 22 and has been to Uni and is working now (sorry can't remmeber what as but would be something with numbers I would think as great with numbers)

    Good luck

    Thanks ladies,

Yeah my SiL son has autism also and he is very smart he walks around with an atlas, tells me about all the planets etc. Very clever boy my sIL always tells me how much my son reminds her of him but she says his alot smarter then her son was at 4
Thing is his excellent verbally but way behind in the other important stuff. Some say it's not important but when a 4 yr old can't even say 1,2 let alone 123 that's where it's starting to become concerning too
He is also the most affectionate child I have lol which melts my heart but I'm starting to get frustrated with the dr because he says there is something else too my son but no idea what? Arrgghh so frustrating
