DS went to one funeral and slept through it. But I'd take him to funerals now - if I am welcome, DS is. The one we went to was for FiL's co-worker's wife. So no real reason to be there. If your DS will drop off to sleep in the car and you can keep him asleep for the service that's a great idea - my DS is more cuddly after a nap too, which may help. (Does at weddings LOL - we take DS everywhere! Including Church, which is why everyone says how "good" he is in Church after such a service; he's used to it.)
DS used to hate leaving Church and cried his heart out after the service when we left. An older gentleman was entering for the next service, turned to us and said how beautiful it was to hear the sounds of life in a Church. Which was so kind of him, DS really gets a wail going! But babies crying aren't seen as a bad thing always, but do consider what the main mourners (ie widow/widower/children of the deceased) will think appropriate before deciding when to leave with your child.
I'd be hurt if DS was barred from a Church. I'd be hurt if my grandchildren or, God willing, great-grandchildren (or even great-great-grandbabies) didn't attend my funeral. Death is a part of life and the earlier we can let our children know this is a normal part of life the better, IMO - children being kept away only heightens the mystery of death and scares people.
My DD, at 11 weeks of age has been to 2 funerals. Neither was for a close relative. At that age, we just made sure that if she started to get fussy either DH or myself took her out of the church (we obviously sat at the back) and settled her.
Also like alot of other have said here, she was a great distraction at the wake for many people. It's always good to see new life after loosing another IYKWIM.
