We're currently hiring a car capsule for Will, and we're about to drive him to Qld from Melbourne and back again. But the capsules look really uncomfortable, specially for that long a journey, it'll be close on 3 days of driving. Any ideas on how to make it more comfy for him? I'm thinking a lambskin, but any other ideas more than welcome. Or feel free to PM me any links you have to great products.
Yes a lambskin would be good and useful for tummy time as well. Does the capsule have a hood to keep the sun off, if not use a muslin wrap or something light.
Check to make sure it stays dry, eg. fron nappy, sickness or sweat.
Frequent stops to let him stretch a bit They are bit on the warm side cos of the higher sides, so just keep that in mind also. I found the kids got a bit sweaty if in there for a while. Being as young as he is, I would say you'll be having fairly frequent stops for feeding, so shouldn't be too hard
Thanks ladies. Do you know if you can buy the hoods seperately? It doesn't have a hood! And just a thin lining, we've been using it since he was born, which is why we're wondering this.
I personally wouldn't use a lambswool or anything padded like that...well actually up until last week I would have but I was reading a safety article that made me rethink it. Basically it said that you shouldn't use anything thick, bulky that compresses like thick parkas lambswools, padded liners etc for the reason that in a crash the force of the crash causes compression of the item making the straps in effect looser and bubs can actually be thrown out of the straps.....they say to strap the baby in and then layer on top for comfort so this doesn't occur......doesn't solve your problem of the lining being thin but does explain why the linings on most carseats are fairly thin through the body area, our capsule was quite sparse in this area too and it makes sense in hindsight......
A hood might help though...either a hood or those shades for the windows...we have those window sox things that work really well......
If by hood you mean a head support thingy then I got a hood seperately for mine from Target. I think I paid less than $20 for it. Before that, I had a spare one from my double pram that I used (my older kids don't need their hoods). Do you have one from a pram you are not using? You could try that first to save some $$$ but they aren't very expensive if you have to buy one. I just got a the head part of it, but they do make larger ones that I have also seen at target that go under their whole bodies. But like anything with Target, it just depends what they are carrying at the time you look - when I got mine, they were near the seat belt section where they also keep the child leashes (sorry, I don't know what they are actually called).
I think I know what you mean by hood.... I did have one, not sure if I still have it though.... for shade and it goes over the handle. You can get the same effect by having the handles or one handle up and then laying a light muslin wrap across it to stop the sun going onto him
I definitely second the idea of not adding bulk to the capsule, for safety reasons, it was reiterated wo use when we had the capsule installed to not add more padding, if you want one with perhaps more padding it is possible to hire one from a place that does the more "modern" one's that look softer - I don't know if they are as I don't have one?
I know a place in SA that does, not sure about interstate...
Is it the original style capsule or the newer Unity one? If it's the original one, you can get hoods for them, you could try eBay. Do a search for "Capsule Hood" and you'll find some. If you want something to make him more snuggly, search for a "Head Snuggler".
