Baby coughing- anything I can do?

My poor little man has a cold and has been feeling pretty ordinary all day. He's in bed now, but keeps waking himself up coughing.

Does anyone know anything that might help him? Should I offer him small feeds when he wakes?

I find vicks on the back helps with the cold, and also used panadol or nurofen to help sooth the throat and keep the cough at bay for a few hours..

    Hi amberj,

My DD is part way through a cold which started with coughing. She was VERY blocked up within 2 days of the coughing starting, so I got her a vapouriser (i got the Vicks one) which did wonders over the following 2 days to unblock her. She isn't over it completely yet and it's been just over a week, Dr has put her on antibiotics to help but I did find the vapouriser along with panadol kept her comfortable. I knew immediately when the panadol had worn off because she'd hvve 5min+ coughing fits which was difficult for her to breathe.

Maybe try that and see how you go. Good luck. It's not nice when they have a cough so hope your little man gets past it quickly.

P.S. My sister caught DD's cold also and was all blocked up. 1 day with the vapouriser unblocked her also and helped the cough.

Have you tried propping up him cot with a pillow under the mattress? This always seems to help my two boys as lying flat seemed to cause them to cough more frequently. It also helps my two breathe better as the flem gets swallowed rather than sit in the nose and throat.

Just in case you didn't know, vicks is not recommended to be used on children under the age of 2.
