Baby Skin Care - What do you use?

    Hi Everyone,

Just wondering what everyone uses to look after their babies skin?

DH and I both have quite sensitive skin so I am going to assume that our bub will too and want to do the right thing from the start.

Alot of books I have read have conflicting advice when it comes to bathing...some say water only, others baby wash, others sorbolene only....and then I have also read plain water isn't good enough, baby wash is drying and causes a moisturiser dependency and sorbolene is evil as it's petro based.

    1. So if your bub has sensitive skin, what have you used from the start?
    2. What products do you use and how often? (ie in the bath, massage, nappy changing)
    3. Why is sorboline so bad? (I used it as a kid for years)

    Thanks Heaps!

DD2 doesn't have sensitive skin as such, but thought I'd let you know what we use - we use Gaia products (from the supermarket) and MooGoo.

Usually I add the Gaia bathwash stuff to her bath but she sometimes has a shower too which is just a rinse in water, or I might use MooGoo.
Massage - Gaia lotion - I think Gaia have a baby massage oil too - or you could use olive oil or another oil.
Nappy changes - nothing really, she doesn't poo much, I just make sure she gets washed on the days she does, fresh air is great and she gets loads of nappy free time. In teh past I have used Bepanthen when needed. We do have the Gaia lotion but I don't really use it, no need to.

HTH - as I said she doesn't have sensitive skin but you might find it a bit of trial & error.. good luck

So if your bub has sensitive skin, what have you used from the start?

~ I used water....plain old water....my youngest had super dry skin when born and after his bath I rubbed in MooGooor Sorbelene Cream. DS#1 - every product under the sun as I thought I had too! Even today my kids just have plain water and once a week their heads get shampoo......although DS#2 loves rubbing foood through his hair so he gets shampoo more often! Little moneky.

    2. What products do you use and how often? (ie in the bath, massage, nappy changing)

~ During humid days I will use Johnsons Baby Powder with Cornstartch. Nappy rash - Daktozin when really bad or a little bit of Aromababy Barrier Cream. When he was first teething (both kids in fact) I bought a store brand Zinc with castor oil cream and coated their bottoms in it, esp overnight!

    3. Why is sorboline so bad? (I used it as a kid for years)

    ~ Is it?

My DS has very dry skin, and gets mild excema, these days mostly on his wrists, elbows & feet, worse when he was younger.

We use QV bath oil every couple of days (in the bath of course), then rub him down with Dermaveen each night. This mostly keeps his skin dryness at bay, although his scalp is particularly stubborn..

If his excema is particularly "flarey" then I give him a couple of doses of Dermaid, cos although we've tried other things, they haven't really worked for him, and having had excema myself as a kid, I know how uncomfortably itchy it was for me, so would prefer to prevent that for him, even if it means using a cortisone cream every few weeks or so.

For us, Sorbolene did nuthin', I guess it's one of those things that you just have to go through a bit of trial and error to find what works for your bub best, as no 2 skins are the same.

I think, Hummingbird, you got it right in your Op - sorbolene isn't so good because of the petrochemicals.

    hey hummingbird

DS had sensitive skin so i used hamiltons wash(from the chemist) and there bath oil when he was extra dry.
when he was newborn i just used to top and tail him everyday and give him a good tub every few days.
i used pawpaw ointment(from the health food store the one without preservitives) if he got nappy rash

Moo Goo Milk Wash, love it love it love it!!! I use it myself as well. DS and me both have sensitive skin and get eczema and it works wonders, it's also natural which is great.
I put a few squirts in his bath and wash him with the water, I also use it as a shampoo for him and it leaves his hair beautifully soft.
I use the full-cream moisturising cream as a body lotion and nappy cream.

Yep sorbolene contains petrochemicals, it makes DS's eczema worse. But there are stacks of great natural options out there, visit your local health food store.

    :yeahthat:

With our 3 babies we only ever used plain water or very safe products like MooGoo that have the same irritation factor as water. Never sorbalene, and NEVER Johnson & Johnson products *shudder*

I love MooGoo for myself too...even my teenage DD has been converted, she prefers it over Pantene now thankully! DH loves MooGoo shampoo too because it helps his psoriasis. The soaps a beautiful. MooGoo has an excellent website. Google Oh and it's Aussie owned and made.

    HI Everyone,

Thank yuo so so so much for your help! I think it will be a little trial and error but I will start off using very little and see how that goes.

I have already bought DH some MooGoo for his eczema to try out and plan to get bub some MooGoo products to use when we need to.

I'll be referring back to this thread when baby comes for inspiration.

Hopefully our DH and I are both carrying genes for perfect skin and our bub gets it! Not likely, but you never know....

Brendan and Tristan both suffer Excema, I use pawpaw salve and xma cream.

In their bath GAIA sometimes, but mostly it's goats milk soap.

I've used some of the Gaia products and they're good but DD has some sensitive skin and we were advised just to use plain water. I now undress her and rub QV wash into her skin like moisturiser before I bath her. It seems easier and her skin has improved. I use pawpaw ointment for nappy rash.

I have also just been told to put cheapo oatmeal into a stocking and use it as soap, apparently it gets creamy milky and you just replace the oatmeal every couple of days. Haven't tried it yet though.

Yep, I've used plain oatmeal in a stocking. It works. Takes a bit of getting used to after living a life with chemicals as cleansers but it is worth trying.

Olive where do you get your MooGoo in Melbourne? Their website only lists outer suburbs and country locations as stockists - is there anywhere in the CBD or inner north that sells it? Bathsheba oatmeal is the traditional old herbalists remedy for sensitive skin - it really works a treat doesn't it?

I only buy MooGoo via online order. The postage that i pay is almost worth not having to buy a train ticket or petrol to the stores here in melbourne. They deliver VERY fast and always throw in a freebie sample.

    Thanks Everyone,

I actually used the oats in the stocking as a kid when my skin was bad, so will probably be doing the same for bub!
