I was not sure if this was the right place to put this but over the last few days Georgia has developed a sort of Barkey cough, noe wheezing and she seems well otherwise no temperature, breastfeeding fine, happy playful, eating solids fussily but thats normal at the moment because we are just coming out the tail end of teething her two bottom teeth.
DH and I have had a scratchy throat but it has not developed into anything and we both feel fine.
Is this something I should be worrying about - I dont want to rush her to the Dr at the slightest thing but I dont want to let something go that could get worse iykwim.
maybe ummm its hard to tell - i thought it could be the cold night air. Its not a cough that she does often ........maybe like 10 times a day .......its hard to explain dh was sitting outside earlier and he could hear her through the door - I think its getting worse slowly everyday but not sure.
Salad - my DS has just been diagnosed with whooping cough.. He is immunised but apparently you can still get it. My dr said there has been a lot of cases recently. (We are in Vic). We have had sereval doctors visits over 6 weeks and they kept saying it was nothing until today. He mainly coughs at night, and he sounds as though he is struggling for breath.
Thanks Mrscricket this did cross my mind we are in Vic too and she had been immunised but I did know you could still get it. She does not seem to be struggling for breath.

I just googled croup to see what it actually was - my brother used to get it really bad when we young and I so remember that 'barking' cough. It lists that as a main symptom. I remember mum sitting in the bathroom with him with the hot taps running (before the days of water restrictions and vapourisers!) so I know that the moisture can help. Maybe a trip to the doctors to be sure? DS has been coughing for 6 weeks now and it's just been horrible. So glad they finally did something about it today.
Could be croup - this is usually also associated with a 'hoarse' sounding voice/cry. Have you noticed this? I personally, would have her seen by GP just to make sure all is ok (more for my peace of mind than anything else).
I havent noticed a hoarse voice or cry but I have noticed that the cough seems to be a bit more apparent each day. So you think its worth a trip to doctor - what do they do to determine if it is croup??
It's usually diagnosed by the symptoms described above. My GP told me that if cough has existed for more than a few days they don't treat, unless it's causing breathing difficulties (can administer steroids in early stages of the condition). It may or may not be croup so I would definately get Doc to check her out, especially given it is worsening. Croup can be very serious for some children (like an asthma attack).

I agree is sounds like croup. My DD has just gotten over her first bout of it at 19months of age. She had the barking cough that persisted mostly through the cold night and a husky voice in the daytime.
I used the vapouriser and it helped immensely!!! She was also thirsty from the coughing so she drank in the night too.
It is a viral infection and apparently very contageous while the cough is still there. It can cause larengitis in adults!
If you notice breathing difficulties phone the hospital as it can be quite serious for some. DD had no trouble and she didnt get prescribed steroids either.

Sounds like croup to me too. Oskar had it, not a lot of fun for our poor little bubs. He got prednesone which is steroid they use to treat it. Certainly works well. I had been to doc and he said throat infection but overnight it turned into croup so we went back next day. That's how fast it can and does develop. Never be afraid to go to the doctor's even if part of you thinks you're being silly. It's not silly at all, if you're concerned then you should go. I hope that it's not croup and that your bub gets better fast.
Thanks ozziehoffy - aww my poor bubby I dont want her to be sick. Lucky we have a great local doc I will see how she is in the morning and make a decision from there
DS had croup a few weeks ago. The cough/cry sounds like a seal bark.
DS did have to have steroids, he was also prescribed ventolin to help relax his airways.
If you are going to get the gp to check, as hard as it is, it might be best to go to the hospital at night, or when the cough is worse, so they can hear it.
Steam might help, but with DS's last bout, I read that it may not.
Hi Ozziehoffy the next day the cough was the worst - I ended up calling Nurse on call and had a chat to them they said it sounded like croup , they were excellent, they told me what to do and also what to do if it got worse or she had trouble breathing. It was pretty much everything I knew anyway but they were still helpful.
Last night she coughed twice and today the same so she seems to be getting better. She is happy so I know that is a good sign. Thank you so much for your concern that is sooooo sweet.
