    Books for Babies - recommendations?

    Hi,

I wanted to buy some books to start reading to my baby - I have a nice alphabet book with really thick pages and she loves to turn those. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for books which introduce a range of literacy and numeracy skills and also basic books with a simple storyline - maybe some pop up flaps or vivid colours? Thanks in advance for any advice!!!!

I found that Charlie loved the cloth Sesame Street books at that age. It had squeaky bits and velcro bits and zipper bits (he couldn't work those!) but basically loads of interactive stuff for him to poke and pull. There were also a series of books by Lamaze that I got at Target. At that age, we didn't use cardboard books yet. Pretty early on, he was able to point out the various Sesame Street characters in his cloth books too!

We read lots of picture story books to Izzy and we have board books for her to hold and for us to look at together.

HERE is a thread I started about picture story books. Also check out the Huggies Book Club, its free postage if you are a member and they often have good discounts!

For babies I really like the "that's not my" books. Each page has a different thing to feel with a lines like "thats not my teddy, its nose it too soft" My DD really loved them.

Eric Carle books (hungry caterpillar etc) are great.

DS loves the "that's not my..." series, they're touchy-feely books with descriptive words. We have the lion, the dragon, the bunny and the penguin ones so far, every time I get a book for me I let DS pick a book too!

"This little baby" is another great one, DS loves the baby faces and the mirror ending - the most kissed mirror in the world!

I have a few baby bibles and baby bible stories that DS enjoys - including ones with flaps, ones with prayers in, bright pictures, pastel pictures... DS likes those too.

I was going to suggest those too We have about 10 lol. There's heaps of different ones.

I buy Darcy books every week or so, but sometimes I just run into The Warehouse or GoLo and get about 5 for 10bucks too. They're only $2 each and it doesn't matter if she 'reads' them to death - it also lets me read something different to her without forking out big dollars. And as she carts them literally everywhere it doesn't matter if one of them goes astray.

We've always given Darcy books with paper pages as well as the board/cloth books, and she's never damaged even one. I remember a girlfriend said to me once "You give her books with pages???"

We have restained ourselves and only have 4. I had to really control myself when I saw the dragon one. Also they have recently updated them and the pictures seem to have more going on. Good set of books as you can generally find one that will interest the bub (or the parents anyway)

Natalie was given a Spot (the dog) cloth book for her birthday and it is really fun. Cloth, so she doesn't hurt herself when she gets into it (what can I say, the girl takes her reading very seriously) and it has flaps with animals that hide underneath. Very cute and fun.
Natalie has always loved cloth books (I've gotten a couple very cheaply) - she takes them to bed with her.
