They are generally flimsy, brittle and not worth the trouble. The real stuff lasts FOREVER - the childcare Centre where I work has a 21-year old set, still going strong, and that has been used a lot more than your average domestic set!
Have you tried buying your Duplo on ebay? Can be a lot cheaper than buying in stores.

I have some for Charlotte that are from Toys R Us - they came in a little red wagon thing.
Not sure if they fit with Duplo...?

They were really cheap - like $20 or something - and they are not flimsy - we have never had one break and DD stands on them lol

    They're called "MEGA BLOCKS"

we have Mega blocks as well... and my mum picked up another huge bag of the same blocks (different brand though) which were complete different colours, so now dd has half of each set here and at mums.
you can spot a mile away the cheaper blocks though, they dont line up or lock in as tight as the mega blocks. but i guess they do the job!

We have both Duplo and Mega Blocks and they do fit together, but the 'pins' on the mega blocks are slightly taller than the Duplo ones, so if you stick a duplo block on top of a mega block, there will be a bit of a gap. That said, they still work together just fine. The mega blocks don't look like they are of the same quality hard plastic as duplo, and there is a bit more 'give' in them, but they are still really sturdy. I wish we could afford more duplo, but they only play with it for such a short time we tend to spend more on lego instead.

I didn't reply in regards to the mega blocks, but seems they do work together....so I vote Mega Blocks if you want something less expensive. We too have not broken any & I got a massive bag of them at last years Target toy sale for about $25!!!! Charlie loves them, he builds a house then smashes it down, he can be rough & they havn't broken.
