I have got a cold sore, on my lip, just a small one. I've had them now and then over the years, mostly when I am run down - like now! I am wondering what is the danger, if any, to my 2month old son? I think I would have been the most contagious int he days before the cold sore showed up in which case he would already been infected.
Does anyone know anything about this and if I need to be worried??? Thanks
I have one too and been worried, I just been making sure I don't kiss her or get too close with it.
I think the fluidy stuff inside is the contagious part?
Yes they are contagious and children can be unwell with a fever the first time they are exposed. But if you're careful about washing your hands with soap often (and before picking DS up/feeding, etc) and not kissing him then you should be ok. I've had them several times but so far DD has not been affected and she's nearly 2.
Well, if you had coldsores before you got pregnant, then bub has your HSV1 antibodies from placental transfer - which is a great start for baby. A lot of the time this means it gets beaten down before it can make it to a nerve cluster.
None the less, it pays to be cautious. Get some Lysine tabs and take between 2000mg and 6000mg - it will flood your body with Lysine to starve it out. It uses arginine to replicate and our cells store lysine and arginine in the exact same place. The more lysine in your system, the smaller this outbreak and the less likely you will suffer a future one. I gave myself one out of utter stupidity right now by indulging on a bit of chocolate and nuts on top of my protien supps and didn't take any lysine to offset the huge arginine/lysine ratio. I am paying for it now because I can't kiss my squishy little bubba girl.
You are not infectious until the blister pops. HSV1 moves to a cell and then uses the arginine in the cell to replicate itself. This happens in many cells at the same time. Once the cell is packed with the replicated virus, the main virus kills the cell, causing it to release the virus. This becomes a cold sore. It cannot use lysine to replicate at all so the more lysine in the cell the smaller the sore. if there is simply too much lysine, the virus gives up and goes dormant again. I have been using this method (along with giving up chocolate and nuts for several months - more good luck than judgement) to prevent an outbreak for over a year and I usually get very recurrant outbreaks.
Flood your body with lysine to reduce the duration of the outbreak, keep your hands clean and do not let bubba touch the sore at all. Once this one is gone, control them with diet adjustment to high lysine/arginine ratio foods and one tab a fortnight. Too many tabs makes your body too dependant on lysine and you wont be able to stop taking them, so one a fortnight is a good measured amount.
Biofalvanoids are good too (they give fruit and veg their bright colours) - for just about every infection you can think of. You get them naturally through fruit and veg but bfing mummas are best taking supps for it too. It will help your body clean up the sore quickly. Good for women who just had C-Sects too because it helps damaged skin heal quickly and fights off infection.

dont know how true this is but my momma always said never kiss babies or suck on dummies if you have one as you could make a baby blind as i said i dont know how true this is. Be clean and don't kiss baby till ALL gone. You have been given some great advice already
Inertita - thanks for the info on Lysine. Thats def an avenue I had not considered before. I'd been treating the cold sore with tea tree oil and that has stopped a blister from forming, just a scab is there. Fingers crossed it'll be gone in a few days.
