Question Colloidal silver for a 13 month old?? Thoughts....

Has anyone given their young child this? We were advised by my acupuncturist/kinesiologist to give this for 5 days as its suspected DD2 has bacterial infections in her sinuses as she's had a continual green snotty nose for weeks now consistently!!

I don't believe in giving antibiotics to such a young child, let alone for me, I hate taking AB's....

Thoughts? I have read some conflicting things about this substance. I got some at a health store today and have given 2 tspn's in a sippy cup of water already.

I hate not knowing whether I am doing the right thing or not

We were also advised to give Manuka honey but thought I would try this first. Both aren't cheap!!

I have used it, but I have heard from other people (who are more into natural therapies than I am) that the bought stuff is pretty crap, pretty weak apparently, so it's better if you make your own..

you mean to drink it? I'd be a bit wary of drinking it after seeing pics of people who've overdosed
Could you try squirting some breastmilk up there?

I hear you on sinus infections - I get them regularly and DD seems to have inherited it from me.

Antibiotics are the only thing that works for me ( usually because I leave it too long because there are about a million things more important than my health - typical mum) and DD has had them a few times but like you - i'm not a fan of giving kiddies antibiotics, unfortunately with DD she really needed them. I have found that with DD if I can keep her nose clear it helps the sinus to drain so I use a crazy amount of saline spray and squirt to flush it out regularly - luckily she loves anything salty so will literally open her mouth in the hope of catching some spray - but I know a lot of kiddies don't like it at all.

Also, if I were you I would probably get her ears checked just to make sure that there wasn't any pressure there - sinus issues can lead to ear issues.

As for colloidal silver - I wouldn't be using it. Noone has been able to show that colloidal silver is safe and effective at any level for internal use in Australia. Colloidal silver has been specifically identified by the TGA as potentially causing toxicity and any that you can buy should not be sold for the treatment of medical problems in people, It is usually sold as a water purifier. This mean there are two problems with it, not only has the product not been shown to be safe or effective but also the manufacturing process hasn't been checked so there is a chance that it is not being safely manufactured or that there is quality control (so there could be other things mixed in with it or the dosage could be really variable) and there is no way for you to check this for yourself.

Thats not to say that it will harm your bub, and I am not trying to scare you, the chances are that it is produced in a safe manner and that it is the dilution that it says it is, but as someone who uses a lot of complimentary medicines I always stay well clear of ones that aren't regulated because there are plenty of cases where things have gone wrong with unregulated manufacturers.

I have been using it as a topical treatment for myself and the kids for years with success. But I would never ingest it. If you overdose on it, it will turn your skin permanently blue. Google 'argyria images' and you'll see why.

Is that what happened to the people on Avatar? *innocent look*

I found colloidal silver at our local chemist, and it says the dose is 20ml a day or something (ingested), and the bottle didnt even say anything about just using topically, or that overdosing could result in permanent colour changes (that is kinda scary!).

Trillian - when do you use it? For cuts & abrasions?

Muppity - thank you for that info. Yes I think my DD has inherited my sinus problems too

Hmm, I don't think I will give her anymore. Just keep it as a topical treatment.

Shanti, yeah, just basic things like that. I just spray it on. I have also used it on the kids when they all had molloscum contagiosum which is a viral infection from the same family as chicken pox and they are quite persistent and can take months to get rid of them. I used the colloidal silver on the affected areas 3 times a day and the kids were completely rid of it within weeks. I have also used it for nappy rash for DS2 as well. He would get nasty reflux that would give him horribly acidic poo and sometimes his bum was red raw and it was the only thing I could use on it that wouldn't make it sting.

I would be very wary about giving colloidal silver to such a small person, for precisely the reason that Trillian has mentioned.

IMO it would be far better to focus on known safe remedies. Fess nasal drops and a snot sucker, keeping her room warm at night and using a vaporiser, teaching her to blow her nose, and supporting her immune system with probiotics. I would also be getting her ears, eyes and throat checked by a dr because she might actually be having problems with her ears which needs more active management. No one likes giving their child ABs but in some circumstances they actually are the best thing.

Irreversible side affects it can cause and that come from a Naturopath telling me that. She also said it should be banned from the shelf cos it's really not safe.

i saw a guy on oprah who had rubbed the cs on his skin for years and he was purple blue. it was a gradual thing so he said he didn't notice ... wth? anyway i use it when i can get it. drink it, rub it and had good results. used it on ds1 from 14 mths rather then abs. would say take it easy and 2 teaspoons seems enough on 1 st day.

Worth pointing out that you can still suffer argyria from only topical use.
Personally, when there are so many other options available to treat various things (essential oils, peroxide, antibiotics...) I'm not sure why you would use it at all. That's just me though.

    Thanks for your posts.

I have exhausted all other options (besides AB's) in terms of vaporisers, warm air, salty water, etc and she's only 13mths so I can't yet teach her to blow her nose, well not efficiently anyway..... so she's had a green snotty nose now consistently for weeks which says to me it's a sinus thing I suffer sinus problems.
I might take her to an ENT (ear nose throat) doctor who can look..... just help get rid of it all.

I am considering AB's next week too..... I gave 2 teaspoons in a sippy cup of water last week but she only took a few sips anyway so she never really ingested much anyway. So no big deal.
