DS2 has been commando crawling since 5 months and now getting on knees so i think it wont be long til proper crawling, but he cannot sit up unassisted.
DS crawled from 4.5 months, was off his knees from about 6.5 months and crab crawled till he walked at 9.5 months...he walked just before he decided to spend some time sitting, so he didn't sit for AGES! So, I hope it's normal enough, even if not the 'average' thing to do
Was crawling at 5 mths couldnt sit up by himself till 6-7 mths. Its very much self pased learning, the guidlines are just that, guide lines.
When I was a baby I went from crawling to running, just got up 1 day and ran with with some twins that used to come over alot lol
My DS was crawling at about 5 months, well shuffling forwards, but had no interest in sitting, at 6 months, he was proper crawling, and would pause in that and lean over to one side in a side sit, then over the past week or so (so 6.5 months) that has turned into sitting on his own. He is also now pulling up to standing and I dont think I will be long till walking... eek... My DS is not a learn by example kid, he needs to figure it out for himself, so sitting came when he was ready. Is your DS like that too?
My DS was the same, comando crawled at 6 months and didn't sit properly til a little after 7 months, I just figured he'd rather be on the move than sitting and he's exactly the same now he's running around everywhere (and I do mean running!)
I would say it's pretty normal!
My DD sat at 6 months and crawled at 12 1/2 months. What your baby is doing is "technically" right according to the Gymbaroo lady I saw. She said no baby should EVER besat deliberately and that they must crawl first and then sit themselves so it's fine! We sat MAckenzie cause I wanted her to have idff view onthe world and she was not looking like crawling at all. I wonder though if we hadnt sat her if she would have crawled earlier???
This was my DS too! Commando crawling everywhere by 6 months but couldn't get himself into the sitting position for ages. I go to Gymbaroo too but I also disregarded the sitting thing and he eventually could sit up (around 7 months or so, I think) but couldn't get himself in and out of that position himself until about 9 months. Was very handy actually, I could put him there for minute and know he wouldn't move lol.
He was pulling himself up on furniture and cruising around it before he could do proper crawling which was at 11 months. He walked at 14 months.
Both my boys were too. They were both commando crawling from around 3 months. Typical of my boys - eager to be mobile and then never stopping LOL! It is actually really good for them to crawl early, the right/left brain cross-over is enhanced during crawling, so crawling early gives them a head start on gross motor and fine motor skills, and also helps prepare the brain for other left/right brain tasks such as reading and writing.

with regard to the above. I do not think a gymbaroo lady would be an authority on human movement and development. It concerns me when untrained people give out such RIGID advice with a sense of real authority. As a trained physiotherapist i would urge mothers with any concerns in regards to their babies development to seek advice from qualified practitioners, your GP is the best starting point, they will refer you on to a paediatric physiotherapist if necessary.
Gymbaroo ladies certainly thinkt hey are an authority on human movement- lol! I used to work with a particularly militant one "NO, Jayden, your fingers have to face INWARDS!" (She was actually very lovely.)

It's actually very common that babies crawl before they can sit - they're using different muscle groups. Lots of crawling will help them to work on core strength, which will help them to sit up. In theory. In practice, there are plenty of babies who don't want to sit still, so they don't bother!
