    Cot to bed?

I haven't even thought about moving my DD to a bed until a friend mentioned it tonight...I think it is too young still (she's 13 months), but it made me curious as to when you should make the shift and what you do and how you know when to do it. I couldn't find anything about it on BB...am I silly?! What have you done and when? Just curious..thanks!

We have recently moved our DS at 2 and 2 months we had tried a couple of times of the last 6 months but he was not ready, he wouldn't go to sleep even with us in there and if we went to leave he would scream and cry. This time no problems at all. We made sure that the cot was taken down and removed from the room so there was no "safe" option for him and have the safety rail on the bed. We also bought him Bob the Builder doona set, night light and some new books that he choose.

DD got a toddler bed from my Mum for her 2nd birthday. She "helped" Daddy assemble it in her bedroom and then "helped" put the sheets on etc. She then put her teddies to bed as a trial. The cot was still in her room at that stage. That night we asked her if she wanted to sleep in her cot or her bed, she said bed and she has slept in it ever since.

The toddler bed fits a a cot size mattress and is very low to the floor. I don't think she could really tell the difference between her cot and the toddler bed. Sometimes she still calls it her cot. I think having her being involved in setting it up etc really helped the process.

Rachel, there is no "right" age. For us, we moved DS1 into a bed at around 16 or 17 months because we had our second baby on the way and we didn't want two cots. Also he seemed ready, he was sleeping well and also sleeping on a toddler bed at day care with no problems. The transition went really well and he continued to sleep well in the bed. DS2 is still in a cot at 18 months, but we will probably convert it into a bed pretty soon. I think that while they fit in the cot, there is no need to move them until they are close to climbing out (For safety reasons). But it also ok to do it earlier if they seem ready.

I say.. unless you have another baby on the way and need to move her early, just do it when she is ready. Dont listen to when everyone else did it as every child is different and are ready for things at different ages. Im moving DS over this week to his big bed.. he will be 19 months, but thats only because i have another baby on the way and want him to get use to being in a big bed for a few months prior. If i wasnt expecting, then i would honestly be holding off for another few months.

    Best of luck.
