Question Does this much water sound excessive? Plus the need to drink water overnight..

DD is 22 months old, is a big water drinker, I am sure it is normal, but sometimes I do wonder with the amount she will drink in a day and overnight.

With each meal she will drink around 250-300ml of water, will empty a bottle and we usually have to refill it again, plus constantly going back for more drinks inbetween meals.
Before bed she has between 100-250ml of milk, and goes down to sleep about 1/2hr after milk, she will then drink another 100-200ml before sleep, and then wake over night 1-3 times for more water, often draining the drink bottle at least once in those drinks.

So I guess she would easily drink 1.5litres + a day.

She soaks through her nappies over night, huggies, her new Gensea Forge Super Trim Night nappy (hoping the absorbancy will increase) plus will be getting some longies

She wets 6-7 IB with boosters a day, plus goes on the potty morning and night and had a morning poo on the potty (love not cleaning pooey nappies ) She is dong all the things to be toilet trained but with the amount of wee she does overnight, she won't be dry overnight for a long time, but she is dry after her day sleeps at the moment and we put her on the potty or Daycare puts her on the toilet after she gets up.

I love that she drinks water happily, we don't offer her juice cordial or any other drinks, as we don't want to kerb her love for water

Does anyone else have a bub that drinks so much water?

That does seem alot of water, but if she isnt offered anything else i dont know...DD1 thought it was a huge game waking up and calling out for a drink for a long time, she still does occasionally.
has she lost alot of weight lately? or had a bad bout of thrush? Generaly feeling lathargic?
if she has any of these other symptoms get her to ur GP for a BSL for type 1 diabetes.
even to put ur mind at ease, its a very quick and easy test.

After going through it all myself whenever i hear of anyone drinking excessivly im like, go get checked!!!! specially little ones.
probably havent helped and jsut made things worse...sorry hun

She did have thrush about 1 month ago, and she also lost about 1/2kg, but seem to have put most of that back on, I just put that down to learning to walk.
She was also ill in January and lost about 800grams due to dehydration, but once we got her rehydrated again in hospital she put that back on within a week or two.

She has been drinking this much water for quite a while, so before all of the above, she isn't really lethargic, quite a busy little girl, and she has one day sleep most days some days not, of about 1.5-2.5hrs.

It might be worth getting her checked just in case, she had extremely low BLS of 0.9 when she was born, but that was due to her prematurity and was sorted out quite quickly and we haven't tested them since.

You haven't made it worse at all, I guess I am just trying to guage how much water would be "normal"/"average" as such, and the need to drink overnight even in the cold weather has got me wondering if other bubs do the same.

Given that 1.5 litres per day is the recommended minimum for an adult I would say yes, that's excessive. My DS liked his water too at that age but I'd say he would have drunk about 500mls a day (milk on top of that).

DD is 18 months and drinks about 600mls of milk a day (she won't eat dairy so I let her have more than DS did) plus some drinks of water but once again, that would not be more than 400mls (more on a hot day).

My first thought was diabetes too - not that I know anything about it, just anecdotally I have heard that a raging thirst can often mean undiagnosed diabetes. Please note that I am hardly an expert, this is just a titbit of general knowledge that I've picked up from somewhere! I'd be asking your child health nurse for an opinion.

I have a little DD who drinks heaps and heaps of water too, probably not as much as your DD but then again I dont really measure it as such, she always has a cup which i refill during the day for her and I drink stacks of water and pretty much everytime I get a drink she shares mine. My DD has been very irritable (which could be anything) she has not really gained weight since before 12 months but I dont think she has lost any, however I had her tested for diabetes last week and we get the test results tomorrow. My DD also sometimes gets a funny smelling breath which I have heard can also be a sign but again can also be other factors.

I really believe you should have her tested, its better to be safe than sorry, I dont want to scare you but Type 1 diabetes can turn bad very quickly and little ones can end up very sick. Most cases are not diagnosed in kids until they are very ill and taken to hospital. Get her tested.

    Good Luck xoxox

Thankyou for your messages , I will get her into the Dr tomorrow to get her BLS done just to make sure, I did wonder about diabetes as my Boss had it and a girl I went to school hade Type 1, and I remember them both drinking of excess water being a marker for it.

Just to be safe will get it done
