after a chat with the lovely Cailin today she had me thinking that maybe DD2 doenst need the amount of sleep id prefer during the day
after a crap night, which followed a great day sleep yesterday, does anyone have any experiences with sleep not creating sleep with toddlers, keep in mind DD is 13 months
should also mention DD had 1 hour day sleep tuesday and only woke once that night
wednesday she had 2hrs 10 mins and was up and down for 3 hours during the night last night!
It would make sense. I know I'm not a toddler (lol) but if I have a sleep of an afternoon, feel like crap getting up but then can't sleep properly overnight. There probably is a point where sleep doesn't create sleep, and getting "too much" can mess up their sleeping patterns. Maybe...
Not in my house! But then sleep is a very random thing here at the best of times, lol. I have found for both my girls that a long day sleep really impacted the night sleep from about 14 months of age. Initially good day sleep meant good night sleep but this theory seemed to go out the window after about 10 months. My guess is probably every child is different (helpful huh?).
I am a wee bit sleep obsessed as it seems to constantly allude us......
Sleep usually created sleep here up to a certain age only. I find if they have a little sleep in the morning it doesn't create a problem at night. It's the afternoon sleep that always created headaches for me once they got over that sleep creates sleep stage.
Have you tried an am sleep instead of an afternoon one? Or even try waking her up after an hour?
I read somewhere that up to 12mths of age, most babies need roughly the same amount of sleep at roughly the same times (morning or night, not specifically 10am or anything like that!) - the whole awake for 40mins as a newborn, asleep for x hrs... totalling y hrs during the day...
But then once they get to 12mths, their sleep needs vary and it becomes difficult to presecribe any sort of formula or pacakge.
So maybe little M just needs less sleep? You could be right!
I'd be trying to adjust things, every day, putting her down a little earlier, a little later, something like that, to see what affect it has on her.
When my 2 were little good day sleeps meant "better" night sleeps. I have notoriously bad sleepers in both my munchkins. My DS is now 4 and still doesn't sleep through every night. My DD sleeps better at night if she's not slept during the day but she is almost 2.5 years old now.
DD is 19 months...since about 12 months the more sleep she got in the day the later she went to bed was IMPOSSIBLE to get to sleep and the more she was awake in the night. so we cut down from two to one sleep. Now we are going from one to no day sleeps atall! If she has an hour or so in the arvo, she is up till 9pm or later and tends to wake at about 12 then 3 then 6. If she doesnt have a sleep shes in bed by just after 7 and doesnt normally wake till about 1 then 5.
I'm exploring this too...
For Phoebe, I find that if she is overtired at night she has a less restful sleep, ITMS? If she sleeps too much in the day though it does affect her night sleep. But I really know about it if she's had too little. (ie she will go down at around 6:30 then wake at 9:30 and screeeeeeeeam and fuss - no amount of boob will calm her. Whereas if she's had too much sleep in the day she will wake frequently but at least she is calm, will happily feed and then go back to sleep.) But then, she is younger... I've no doubt it will all change in a few months
DD#4 (2.5) can be a pain to get to sleep at night if she sleeps too long during the day. I have discovered that if I stop her from sleeping during the day after a few days she gets very grupmy! So I have decided to limit her day sleeps by waking her from her day sleep (if she has one). It has helped a LOT!
i think sleep is definately affected differently at different ages
I noticed when they were newborns upto to 8/10 mnths, they seemed to need the day sleep in order to sleep well at night...if they didnt have a good sleep duriing the day, the night would be restless and wakeful
but after 12-14 months that definately changed, they didnt seem to need (or want) the daysleep as much. They'd have shorter naps rather then the longer 2-3 hour sleeps.
by 18 months the day sleeps were almost non existent and i found that if i put them to bed early (7.30ish) they'd sleep well thru the night.
The main thing is not to expect that their pattern of sleep to stay exactly the same for the next couple of years...it changes as they grow.
That theory hasn't worked for a long time for my DD. She seems to not need as much sleep as a baby. I am always tempted to get her to sleep more during the day bc I like the free time but I really shouldn't because the less sleep she gets of a day, the better she sleeps at night. But she still will only sleep around 9 hrs a night!! She just doesn't need as much sleep apparently, GREAT! lol.
