I normally dont like to comment in these threads a I really do have a good sleeper and I can see some people are doing it really tough
But I think every child is different. I suppose like as adults, some can cope on 4 hours a night and others need 8 hours or look out! Some are morning people, some are evening people.
I think its about finding what your child's sleep "groove" is and sticking with that.
For us, each day is different. At daycare she sleeps anywhere from 45min to 1 hour max! At home days she has anywhere from 2 to 4 hours sometimes broken into 2 sleeps or one massive one. I just try to read her signs. I think on home days she tries to catch up on her sleep she has missed out on previous days Kind of like how we do on weekends (hold on I'll re-phrase that...like we USED to before have children) LOL!
It seems regardless she still will sleep a good 12-13hours a night and its rare for me to have to get up to her. I am very fortunate especially as I am by myself in the evenings with DP working 2 jobs and only really home between midnight and 8am to sleep.
I cant tell you what the secret is as I have no idea. She has a sound machine that plays a heartbeat, some soft toys in her cot to play with and comfort her, a dummy that is attached to her so that she can easily replace it if it falls out. I have noticed if I have not attached the dummy to her at bedtime she will wake in the night crying as she cant find it and then will need a cuddle to calm down.
Anyway lots of to you and where is that sleepyvibes icon?? We need one of those
that sleep creates sleep theory NEVER worked for me....
i now have a 2 month old who doesn't sleep much during the day, but will sleep about 10-12 hours at night waking once or so for a feed then straight back to sleep...
i don't buy that theory working for ALL babies/toddlers.... i just don't think you can apply rules to all kids.... some definitely need less sleep...
What I DO find helps sleep at night, regardless of the above, is getting outside during the day for a bit of a run around in the fresh air - at the park, backyard, walk in the pram, whatever. Outside time always seems to result in them sleeping more soundly.
