Yup, DD will still have 'extended' tantrums. It is distressing, you are right. But if I don't react in any way (other than turning around to ignore it), they are shorter.
Certainly we have many more tanties when DD is tired and also when she is hungry - this was a learned one and I'm so glad I figured that one out! Often I can distract her from a tanty with food because often that's the reason for it (and she doesn't realise, or doesn't know to ask for something to eat) IYKWIM.
Hang in there - I find it less distressing now, and her behaviour is much more predictable (so dealing with it is much easier now than it was even just a few months ago). Keeping in mind that this is also the only way they know how to vent their frustration helps too, although in the heat of the moment its hard to feel compassionate, LOL!

I thought I should add this - to make everyone feel a little better about the Tatnies they are dealing with.

One of my nephews has the mother of all embarrassing tanties. He doesn't like shopping - at all. So my poor sister has to go shopping every week with a 3 year old boy who spends the whole trip wailing and screaming "Help Me! Help Me!"

The poor girl is so glad she is in a small town now because everyone knows her. Her DF is filipino so she was worried that people would start thinking she was trying to kidnap him.
