Are you using a sheet to cover him? To transition my DD I used a sheet while she was still in the sleeping bag and then the day I stopped using the bag I put blankets in her cot over the sheet (it was cooler weather at the time) and I found she was fine with the transition because she got used to being covered with the sheet.
