DS has a huge lump on his head! I'm freaking out! What could it be?

ABout 2 days ago i noticed a lump on my 7 month olds head, its on the right hand side of his head about 5cm above his ear. Its quite big, around 1 1/2 times the size of a 50cent peice. I had a gentle feel and it feels soft, almost like its filled with fluid. I made an appointment with his doctor but we can't get in until Monday. I figured it might be from the way he sleeps, his head is a little moulded and wonky because he favours his left hand side when he sleeps and i thought it would be ok to wait until his appointment but Dh just got home from work and we had another look at it when DS2 woke up from his sleep and I think it might have gotten bigger so DH has taken him to emergency. I'm freaking out! I've been watching him closely and he's still happy, laughing, not drowsy, pupils ok etc etc all the things to look for with a head injury. He's just learning to pull himself up on his knees and he's had a few falls but nothing too bad and it doesn't seem like a bruise to me, its not purple or red, just skin colour and it doesn't seem to hurt when i touch it. Could it be his brain?! I don't think its a fontanelle (sp?) because its at the side of his head and i can feel both his fontanells which are closing nicely.

I feel so stupid for not insisting we get an appointment sooner, DH thought i was being silly for worrying but after he looked at it tonight he started to worry too and now i'm really freaking out.
What could it be??? I'm hoping DH will call soon to tell me what the dr's say. Hopefully he wont be waiting all night to see someone.

Sorry I can't be of any help but just wanted to say you've done the right thing and gotten him checked out.
    I'm sure it's nothing serious.
Thinking of you. I know how stressful the wait must be.

As hard as the wait will be, I hope you get some comforting news soon about DS. He is in the safest place and you did the right thing taking him to the hossy.

I'm sure your little man will be fine.

Thanks Lovenhope, i just texted Dh and he hasn't replied so i'm hoping that means DS is being seen by the doctors. I keep thinking of worst case scenarios...what if its his brain protruding? What if its a cerebral fluid build up or worse what if he's fractured his head?? I feel like such a bad mummy, surely i'd know if he's fractured his head right? I mean he's had some ouchy falls where he's lost his balance and plonked straight back on his head but he's seemed ok after, just the usual bumps and biffs bubs get.

I'm probably just freaking myself out, i've just never seen anything like it and i can't think what it would be.

I would think if it was anything nasty there would be other symptoms. Try not to think about worst case (i know easier said than done).
    Any news yet?

well the doctor finally saw DS and he said that DS was fine, he couldn't really say what the lump was but he was sure it wasn't a head injury. He said if it was a head injury there would be blood coming out of DS's nose and ears (horrible image, don't even want to think about it). So Ds is back home and all snuggled up in bed. I'll Talk to Ds's doctor about it on Monday and see what he thinks. I did some googling and apparently the is a thing called a cephalohematoma which is a fluid build up under the baby's scalp, common after birth and with head moulding. Apparently its harmless and goes away on its own. Hopefully thats all it is. Wow what an exciting and scary night. Think i'll go relax with a cuppa!
