    Exercising while breastfeeding

    Hi there,

I am a first time mum to a gorgeous 6 week old baby girl. I have decided to join the gym again to lose my baby weight. I did an aerobics class this morning and it was really good. Just a question though, I found that my breasts hurt a bit throughout the class. Is this because I am breastfeeding? Is it ok to do aerobics while breastfeeding? Should I wear a sports bra?

    Thanks for any advice!

Hello & congratulations on your baby girl. From what I have been told when you return to exercising you should stick to low-impact stuff like walking for the first 12 weeks, longer if you are breastfeeding. The high impact stuff is not good for b'feeding mums and you basically have to strap your bb's down tightly with a very strong sports top or 2 if you are doing anything remotely jumpy or bouncy. Also exercising too hard can reduce your milk supply - it puts too much stress on your body. Plus there is the dehydration factor - you need to drink loads before and after.
Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to get back to your pre-baby body so soon. It will happen..just not over night. Enjoy your bubba and good luck!

Hi what was said above is good.. another thing is also... I can't remember the name but something is released into your system when you exercise.. and can go into breastmilk.. not a bad thing but sometimes baby may not like the taste... so lots of water and not to much exercise...

I think gentle exercise is the key. After giving birth you still have relaxin (sp)in your system which makes your joints more flexible, it makes the risk of strains and injury higher so just take it easy for a while.

Best to check with your Doc though as I think much of it would depend on the level of exercise you did before and during your pregnancy.

    Hi!

Yep - what Nic said was right - Lactic acid can be transferred into the milk..Neither of my kids went off their milk though...

I started back at the gym when Louis was about 3-4 months old and this time around started back when Dylan was 6 weeks old and haven't found it to be a problem. Definitely wear a sports bra and try and feed bubba before you go if you can...I've been doing step, aerobics, circuit classes that are like personal training sessions etc and it's been all good. Just don't try to do too much - have a day off in between training and make sure you drink lots of water and eat lots of really good food!

Thanks for your replies! I will go out tomorrow and buy a good sports bra. I suppose i just have to listen to my body and not over do it. The weight will come off eventually!

It really, really will come off. try not to buy into the "elastic snap-back" body we keep getting shown on tv!
Yeah get the sprts bra - less chance of black eyes he heee he!

Hi started back at the Gym when Matthew was 8 weeks old. I wore a sports bra and have not had any problems with it. Matthew never had a problem with my milk, but I did drink heaps of water. I think it's great you're going back to the gym, a happy mum means a happy bub
