Concerned about lack of wet nappies - 4mth old

DS has just turned 4mths old but his lack of wet nappies has been bothering me for probably over a month now.
He hardly ever seems to have a wet nappy and I cannot remember ever changing a heavy wet nappy ever. Today I thought I would really monitor his nappies closely, by lunch time nothing, if he did pee then it must have been a really small amount, I could not feel it, see it or smell it. He was in a disposable so I put him into a cloth nappy to see if maybe that would be wetter, I thought the disposables may have been too efficient. I put him into this at 1:30 this afternoon and checked it throughout the afternoon - nothing and tonight at 6pm still nothing.
I have been feeding him every 2-3 hours to try and increase and keep my milk supply up as I has been having huge troubles with my sleep and quite stressful things happening in my life, you would think that is plenty and would produce wet nappies. He doesnt poo everyday but definantely poos every second day and could be 2-3 times that day.

To me he seems settled, nothing unusual maybe a bit clingy but I think thats just him. I cannot see any signs of dehydration, his fontanelle is fine etc. I have an appointment with MCHN on thursday.
Hope someone can help.

Well pooing every second day is a good sign, but the lack of wee is not what you'd expect.
Maybe call the health direct line for advice? Maybe there's something else going on, not a lack of milk per se..? Has it been very hot?

What is he like in himself? Is he more sleepy, less energetic, is his mouth moist? Has he been sweating much today? You could try putting a tissue in his nappy as this will get wet very obviously if he is weeing.

Hun TBH I would be starting to get a bit worried by now. Little bubs can get dehydrated quickly so I think I'd err in the side of caution and call the local hospital to see whether they advise you bring him in. You're his mummy and you're worried so trust that instinct.

hi muminalice - he is fine smiling playing, no sweating today its been cool today, no signs he is dehydrated, he definately does not have wet nappies they are bone dry. Its not just today they are hardly ever wet

He woke at 6 this morning still no wet nappy, then at 9am this morning he has done a poo and as far as I can tell a wee and the poo was fairly watery.

SB - Did the ABA suggest anything to do, I have tried feeding every 2.5 - 3 hours to increase my supply as I thought he might not be getting enough but I dont feel fuller at all, I know that is not always an indication. He used to sleep right throught from 11pm - 6am and I dont know if this is a growth spurt thing or he is genuinely hungry as he is waking every 3 hours now. Everyone keeps telling me to add formula or put him on formula, which I have nothing against but its hard for me to do when I know I have fed my DD for 13months. This time around just hasnt been easy or enjoyable.

I am going to ring the MCHN nurse now and see what she says.

Well I just rang the MCHN and straight away she said take him to the doctor, to be honest I dont really understand why when I cannot see anything else physically wrong with him, I know the lack of wet nappies is not normal grrrrr. I rang the Dr and explained, the nurse agreed that it was strange and didnt really know what the Dr would do but suggested I come in and get a specimen collection bag and see if we can collect some wee and she has given me an appointment 2pm tomorrow. DH thinks he has been whingy but I just think he has been normal I am really confused.

Waking more often and changes in feeding patterns, irritability etc are quite normal at this age.
I'm no medical expert, but it sounds like he's ok. I don't think formula is really necessary at this point, given that he appears to be happy and healthy in all respects.

I think its good your getting him checked out! Its better to be told its all ok than to not check him out and wish you did... xxxooo Sorry to be another to say "go formula" i fed DS without it for 16 months, but i just dont seem to be able to fully satisfy this little poppet- i think it has to do with the fact i am chasing a two year old and not resting (like at all) which is effecting my supply alot. I have finally gotten a hold of some fenigreek to see if that helps me so i can kick the bottle. But it has helped here- although she wasnt having NO wet nappies, just not so much in the afternoon, and now she is definatly getting the four-6 a day. But thats just me and her, everyone is different

The ABA lady wasnt alot of help to me as she said DD was doing the bare minumum of wet nappies, she suggested i rest more and feed as often as possible... which i would if i could!!!

I've just seen this. What a stress - like you don't have enough on your plate ATM you poor darl.

I think it's great that you're getting him checked out - at worst they'll just say "nothing wrong" and at least you can stop worrying a bit!

ETA: DS is also waking more overnight and wanting to feed more and more... I think age is definitely a factor!

salad i would get him checked only as he is 4 mths if older i would say he likes to hold on lol
Seriously which nappies do u use.... as i just changed my little man (3 wks old) and it was HUGGIES and they have a line that appears and the whole nappy feels soggy ..
If your little one didnt have a wee in a 24 hr period at all then i would have him checked seriously as that would be a concern.

Im not trying to sound obvious but you stated your stressed maybe your just not realising that he has wee'd on more occassions and the days you are really waiting for it it just wont happen on demand iykwim.

And another thing when he does wee is his penis red/raw and or does he scream ? As he may have an infection ??

hi bubno.3 - for me during this stressful time its been more of a case of me not doing anything about his lack of wees than not noticing his dry nappies if that makes sense. Things have been so busy and frantic that I change his nappy think hmmm that wasnt wet - on multiple occasions, then I continue on with life as normal - thats sounds terrible but its only because he doesnt show any other signs that there is something wrong. He doesnt cry or shows signs of discomfort when he wees either. I did have him in the huggies newborn with the wetness indicator and they are great, I wish they were around when I was a first time mum lol. He was 8lb14oz born though so he didnt stay in them very long, I wish all huggies nappies had them. Thanks for your post.

lol its ok OP you get from the doctor whats called a paediatric specimen bag and place it over their bits it sticks on and their pee goes into the bag. Sometimes not as easy as it sounds.
