Moving into a Bed - Any Tips?

Our DD's first bed arrives tomorrow, so she will be spending her first night in it and I wondered if anyone has any tips about how to make it a smooth transition. I am worried that she will fall out, and while we do have a rail for it, it doesn't go the full length of the bed and she moves around her cot A LOT!! (She will do 360's and 180's all night and sleeps in every corner of her cot possible).

Is it a bed with a base or a bed with slats??
both mine were in 'big' beds at the age of 1 i simply put the cot matress under the bed and pulled it out at night "soft landing" if they did fall out... i sat with them reading books, left the door ajar and they had their teddies with them also left a lamp on in their room.. they did get up a gazillion times but i just kept putting them back..didn't take long for it to click...

we have started today.. any more ideas anyone??
i tried to put him into his bed, he does get the idea that its his big boy bed, however, as soon as he finished his bottle, straight back out again. put him into his cot, straight to sleep.
So, i am going to, now he is asleep, transfer him back to his bed. I am lucky i have both rooms set up, so, i have time etc, but, it would be nice if is just 'happened'

hi, just wondering about this too, at what age do most people transition? Is one too early to go into a low toddler bed?

I put DS in his bed last week he is 19mths - I needed the cot for DD so had no choice. For about the first 4days I made sure they were busy days so he was particularly tired and took him to the park not long before bed to wear him out. Then when I did put him to bed I shut the door and then when he was asleep I opened it. He never got out in the middle of the night once and still hasnt. I no longer wear him out before bed as he is use to the big bed now. I am suprised because when he was in his cot he use to wake in the middle of the night all the time but doesnt now. I dont have problems with him falling out though because I got a racing car bed because the sides were slightly raised so the only way he can get in and out is down the bottom.

I have heard the side rails work well and everyone I know also put some sort of padding around the bed for a little while until they stop falling out.

The only crappy thing is now he get up about an hour and half earlier of a morning but it's better then him getting up through the night.

DD1 stayed in a cot until she was 3.5 years and it was fantastic. I wanted the same with DD2, but she tried to dive out on her head when she was about 2 years 10 months, so we moved her out. i hate to say but we've had trouble's ever since. She went into a toddler bed which very very slowly went downhill over the next 3 months or so. She is now in a bunk down the bottom, and even though she will sleep in it (we have a rail and I put cushions around the edges) she is taking HOURS to go to sleep. She just plays up. This is a child that was a fantastic sleeper until leaving the cot.
For me, I say keep the cot as long as possible. That's my experience. I would've had her in a cot still if I wasn't worried about her falling on her head. xoxo
