Having serious struggles even getting the Little Guy to sleep in the cot.
No matter how asleep he is when I put him in there, he has never once slept in there longer than 20minutes.
But, If he sleeps in the middle of our bed he gets a great and usually lengthy snooze.
I think it's because of the closed in feeling (HATES the carseat too) and the fact that that as soon as he shifts he bangs himself on the side. He's a real acrobat.
The cot is just for show really as I've totally given up on it. However he takes up more room in the bed than DH and I'm a bit over it really.
We do have a trundle bed (ie low low to the ground) and I've been seriously contemplating just getting a soft bed rail and putting him on that. He's very mobile and can climb up onto the kids lounge and the rundle is no higher than that.
Has anyone tried a bed this early? (he's only 10months)
We skipped the cot and went straight from crib to full sized bed, but DS was a bit older (18 months). I would think as long as you had a rail on the trundle bed it would be fine.
I think Montessori actually recommend just having a mattress on the floor and not bothering with a cot. We moved DD out of her cot on to the cot mattress on the floor at about 13 months cause she was banging herself on the sides and waking up all the time. She slept a lot better and we have moved her to a child's bed now. Just make sure his room is childproof in case he decides to go walkabout
We did the same thing as pixie- on DS's first birthday we took the matress out of the cot and put it on the floor. He was flately refusing to sleep in the cot and owuld screma when i went to put him in there!! And now he is happy as larry and he is so cute when he wakes up from his nap and comes happily out of his room instead of crying in a cot!! He is sleeping much better too!!! And its easier to go in and comfort him if he does happen to wake too early and be a bit unsettled- i can just go and sit or lay with him and its all good!!
Yep we've done the same as pixie. Jazz sleeps AMAZINGLY on the mattress on the floor. All night in fact! She also gets herself up in the morning and plays (we shut her bedroom door but her room is a safe space) for a while before wanting me to open the door for her. Jazz used to wke herself banging on the cot bars at night, and would scream waking up 'behind bars' I guess you could say.
Montessori do recommend co-sleeping, and then, when you move them out of your bed, bypassing the cot, as it is seen as a restriction. They recommend a method know as the "Floor Bed" which is just that a mattress on the floor. Some babies WILL sleep better knowing they aren't closed in. Jazz certainly does. We were worried at first that she'd see it as an invitation to play all night but it seems to do the opposite. Because she knows she CAN get in and out at her own free will, she does seem to need to. She also falls asleep without booby at night. We just go in, lay down, and she lays down and falls asleep, often immediately.
Google it if you want to read more.

Yep - same here! We went from co-sleeping straight to toddler bed which he can climb in and out of by himself. A mattress on the floor or the trundle just might be the ticket for a good nights sleep all round. I think give it a go - give it at least 2-3 weeks to let him settle in and see how it goes. If it doesn't work you can always go back to co-sleeping for a while longer.
I'm glad I read this thread! DS is cosleeping with us too at the moment and he LOATHES the cot! It was seriously the biggest waste of money and space and is also just there for show, it's never used I guess we will try a mattress on the floor too once he starts to walk, but until then he is in the bed with us!
