    Question MILK

sDS (14mths) gave up lunchtime breastfeeds just before he turned one. So at lunchtime he gets a sippy cup of cows milk. He does just end up making it drip onto the floor and doesn't drink much.

But the other day it dawned on me, does he need a bottle of milk at lunch? How do I get him to drink milk at lunch? I can't make him drink from his sippy cup if he's not thirsty for milk...

How do I get him to have a proper milk drink at lunch? And how much should he be having?

I think if he has other serves of diary, like cheese and yoghurt then he doesn't NEED to have a cup of milk.

If he doesn't drink it out of a sippy cup, what about just a normal cup? Just sit him in the laundry tub or kitchen sink if you are worried about mess

He definitely doesn't need cows' milk at all. In fact, he doesn't need any dairy at all. What he does need is 3 serves of calcium. If he is having dairy, cheese and yoghurt can provide this without milk. Even without dairy he can have 3 serves of calcium from other sources such as almonds, broccolli, salmon with bones etc.

If he is drinking milk, about 150 - 200 mls is a serve of calcium. And he really shouldn't have any more than 3 serves a day, or it can interfere with his intake of solids.

My boys drink cows' milk with breakfast (most days) and with their evening meal (most days) but rarely with lunch. I found it a nuisance to send a cup of milk to day care without it being spilt and then most days it was coming home untouched anyway. So I stopped sending it and now they generally don't want milk with lunch even at home.
