My DS2 who is 20months sounds exactly the same & his daddy it too telling me to get it cut because of this. When he wakes up in the morning it's all tangled and frizzy LOL.
I use a leave in conditioner, or some of the detangler spray stuff....he loves me spraying it in crazy little man. I actually use it for both my boys, makes brushing soooo much easier and it looks heaps better. I also use one of those little heaxagon brushes (have no idea if you know what I mean), I got mine from the kids hairdresser, it's gentle easy to use & they use it themselves too.
we are a curly household and when my boys had fine hair the matting did become a problem (stopped when we cut it so it was more uniform inlength). i think the best thing is to keep it clean and conditioned and to brush it often.. the more you leave it the worse it is. we did have lots of screaming sometimes on hairwashing night. i bought them each a special brush (that they chose) and this helps. but sometimes its just one of those things you have to do....
DS1 has gorgeous longish curly hair too, which DH is always trying to get me to cut, no way!!! I use a spray-in detangler to help, you really need to brush morning and night to keep on top of the knots. I tell DS that the fairies come in the night and dance in his hair and knot it all up, then he thinks it's funny and let's me brush it!
