How do you get a newborn to stay sleep during the day?

My DS goes to sleep very easily during the day on the breast or carried, rocked etc but once he is put down (even after 20 mins of being carried etc) he is wide awake within about 5ish minutes and I can't seem to resettle him. Thus he is only getting 5 to 10 mins sleep at a time which isn't nice for him or me as he needs the sleep! A hammock hasn't helped so far. Can't get a dummy to stay in the mouth either! He sleeps really well at night so just looking for tips to help him STAY asleep once asleep during the day!

My little man is 5 weeks and we are on exactly the same rollercoaster. I will say that it's all a bit of trial and error at the moment.

Working for me today is the Music for Dreaming CD. At the moment I get him quite drowsy and then he goes into his little cot. The music seems to take him that little bit further into proper sleep.

However what is working today might not work tomorrow!!!!

Have you got a sling or other carrier? Just carry them for sleeps? I have always loved the path of least resistance!

Yes, I have got a sling and it does get him to sleep and stay there however I can't change my daughter's nappy, make her lunch, take her outside for a swim etc when DS is in the sling! Glad I'm not the only one!

I would suggest wrapping really firmly as well.

Yes I am wrapping! I have tried three different wraps and have a good one now that doesn't come undone with movement so he is firmly but comfortably swaddled!

What sling do you use? I have a HAB and I can do nearly anything in it...

    Hi

Your baby might be going through the first mental development change as well, this generally happens between 4-5 weeks but can be earlier or later as it is based on your babies bue date (not the birth date unless your baby was born on the EDD).

At this time your babies sight is starting to get better and they are becoming very aware of the world around them which is quite scary, as such the only thing that gives them comfort is generally mummy hence the sleeping when being held etc. When they are put into a cot or bassinet they feel the separation from you. My DD went through something very similar at the same age and for about a week I was having to hold her to get her to sleep during the day, for some reason though she was o.k at night (maybe because everything is dim and the outside world isn't as scary).

My DD is now 12 weeks old and she sleeps 12 hours at night and puts herself to sleep during the day either in her cot, on the floor on her playmat or in the pram if we are out. I would recommend a book to you called "Wonder Weeks" it explains all the mental development changes that occur and has been a godsend for me to be able to anticipate the next change and to be prepared for it. Just an idea, but the next wonder week after the 4-5 week one is around 8 weeks and then again at 12 weeks.
