really depends on the parents i think - i love putting DD in hand-knitted things - i have some little jackets i am absolutely dying to put her in but she's just not big enough yet! they were made by my great nan before she passed away, and given to me when DD arrived (about 6 years later). she has some cute little things, but she is still too small for most of them (go figure!)
anyhoot - as i said, it depends on the parents - my cousins wife flat out refused to put anything that wasn't "designer" on her DD's from birth, so for someone like that, booties would be a waste of time and effort. DD has a couple of sets of booties that she wears when we go out - she'd wear them at home too if she wasn't such a chucky baby - she pukes on everything and i find woolens are harder to keep clean than thick socks i can throw through the machine...
I had so many pairs of booties knitted for DD it was crazy. No exaggeration but she has about 35 pairs!! Mind you she does have 3 grandmas and 3 great grandmas so between them all they knitted up a storm!
I did sometimes put her in the booties and they were cute but rarely. In that newborn phase, the all in one suits that cover their feet are great and I really didnt want to fuss with taking booties on and off after every nappy change as you had to do get the feet out of the all in one.
I think they are nice for special occasions. Ie. We went to a christening for my cousins baby when DD was littel so I put knitted booties on her then.
I do think its a lovely gift though as it is made with love and from the heart.
I knitted a few of my friends woolen booties, I never saw them on the babies, but from my own experience, I dont put them on jacob, but they are a beautiful keepsake! I know I will keep them forever.
My MIL knitted heaps of booties for my DD and i love them! - She made a whole lot of varied colours so i could co-ordinate with DD's outfits i still use them and only have 2 actual pairs of shoes for DD. She has tiny feet so i find buying shoes for her hard as she cant wear the sizes that are for her age. - i have one pair of shoes that were given to me when she was born, and she only now just fits into them nicely!!
I'm personally not keen on them at all. Especially not for a boy. Before he was born DS got given some booties and knitted jackets and they've never been worn.... just not my style Don't tell my MIL
I have a ton of knitted booties...she has only worn one pair once but I found them really annoying, having to take them off and put them on after every nappy change. At the moment, and since she was born, she's only every worn all in one suits so no need for booties with them anyway. I also have a ton of little hats/beanie things which she has never worn! They are cute though...and I think if you have a nice pair of booties which have been hand knitted it's a nice keepsake!
we've been knitted some things (booties & jackets/jumpers) and DS doesn't wear any of them. But he has eczema, and I cannot wear wool to save myself... so never wanted to put it on him anyway. It's cotton all the way for us!
I know I got a bit excited when my DH first had his vas rev and I started knitting then my cousin had a baby and I was going to knit for her but my Auntie said babies don't really wear knitted stuff anymore it's more the terry towelling all-in-ones (whatever) - things easy to wash and do nappy changes in.
My friend knits for her grandaughter but she feels her daughter does not put the baby in those clothes.
my grandmothers made beautiful knitted singlets and other items when we were bubs, and i wish i still had them for my kidlet to be. I bought some kniting needles and am thinking about teaching myself, but would love it if a friend knitted me some booties or something else.
Not so much the booties but I love the little cardigan/jackets and have used them on all 3 of my boys. I have some adorable ones but now it's too hot for them here...lol.
