    MMR

    Hi all,

Well, Smee's having her MMR tomorrow, and though i have the list of potential side-effects/post-vaccination issues my GP gave me i was wondering if any of you whose kids have had it had any extra advice. She's usually fine after her vaccinations, sometimes a little grumpy the day after/sore on the vaccine site for a few hours, but never had a temp or rash or anything.

This is her last vaccination before her big break so i want it to go smoothly for her (so there's no awful memories lurking when she has the pre-school boosters). I always hold her and am calm and loving but not over-sympathetic ("Oh darlin, i know it stings, but what a brave girl! Look at the bells!" etc.) so she usually cheers up before we get out of the heath visitors room.

Did anyone have particular problems with this? Anyone got tips?

NB - i know this is a contentious subject, and please rest assured that we thought very carefully about the decision to have her vacc'd. I'm not looking for stats on terrible side-effects like death, i just want to hear from those who've had the MMR done and their experiences.

    Thanks

    Bec

I would also welcome "we had the MMR and no worries at all" type stories....

    Bec,

Olivia and Charlie and Lexie have all had the MMR no side effects no dramas....I think Lexie has one more lot to go?

Like you have nentioned, a tad grumpy for a few hours, a little more tired and thirsty, but no real issues.

Olivia is now 3.5 and LOVES going to the Drs surgery for any reason.......I suspect jelly snakes and the abundance of puzzles in his office may have something to do with it.......she knows that's where you get your needles done.

Even if we just go to reception to pick up a script she says stuff like "The Dr give me a needle today Mummy?" (She has seen Lexie and Charlie have theirs: not sure if she actually remembers her own?) It is said with interest rather than fear, IYKWIM?

    THat's great news thanks Lucy!

SHe's always been fine, it's just the older she gets the more "aware" she is, kwim? Usually she's at the docs with me as i have to get blood drawn every six weeks to check my thyroid and she sees that all the time and sees needles isn't scary etc. i think she cries partly cos it stings (like the meningitis C - i had that age 18 in Halls and it DOES sting!) and partly cos she's annoyed that mummy's holding her leg still. Lol.

We agonised over this one so i guess there's more "hype" in my head iykwim. Need to get over it before tomorrow. Lol.

    Thanks again

About 8 years ago they gave MMR to school children in NSW at school so I took my whole class to have their needles!! They were 10 at the time but all 27 of them were fine too. My DD's didn't have side effects either although DD1 had hers at school not as a baby but DD2 was only small.

Give sodium ascorbate leading up to and after vaccinations. Kalokerinos did research on Aborigines in Australia and the ones that got Vit C were less likely to have problems.

My son was fine with his first (12month) MMR, though it did take my time considering it. He had no obvious reaction, no temp or anything.

I think he has another one when he is 4.

I her you Rayray! I've been worrying about this one since before she was born. I've talked to GP's, nurses, Obs, Peads, you name it. I've read every study done on MMR, all those done on non-combined vaccine, around 10 on measles, 3 on Ruebella and 2 on mumps, and weighed up all the evidence and come to the conclusion that this is what i should be doing. Still, the one i agonised most over, bound to feel a bit worried i guess. I read that study Morgaine! There are several which question its findings, but i'm doubling her vit C today anyway, does no harm...

Jelvie can i ask what your DD's reaction was? My information indicates that reactions to the MMR can occur weeks later, never mind days...

Aidyn had a mild temp after his MMR. He also broke out in a rash all over his body about a week later - but the Dr couldnt say whether it was related or not.

Dont stress about the MMR vac. I was hugely stressing partly cause i had needle phobia ever since i got my 5 year old shots and partly cause some of the reports about reactions of MMR vac in particular. I too read all the info and studys done adn decided that vac was in archies best interest. Archie cried about 30 seconds while and after the shots then he jumped of my lap and ran over to play wth toys!! I was flabbergasted cause all his other vacs he screamed hysterically for 10 mins after. The 2 day following his shots he had sore arms from injection sites and he might have had a slight temp, and was whingy for a few days. No other side effects here, he had them done 3 weeks ago.

SO, don't stress, i encourage you to get them done at CYH cause the nurses are incredibly good at doing them quickly and quickly taking their mind of them afterwards. I used to get them done at drs but after seeing the nurses at CYH this time i would never get them done anywhere else again.

Everything will be fine it will be over before you know it x x

I ended up in hospital with Darcy for a raging temp at the 6 month injections, so when the Doc said, she'll most certainly get a temp with the MMR, I was terrified, but we had no reaction whatsoever! Not even sore arms that I could a tell.

My goodness jelvie how terrifying for you all! I'm glad i'm reading that afterwards and not before, i'd still have had her vacc'd but would have been even more scared. LOL. I'm glas she was ok. I too would be suspicious about the vaccination being the cause... WHat did they say it was if not that?

SHe cried, obviously, and she struggled very hard (and is deceptively small and thin-looking for her strength so i think until she started to struggle the nurse though i was holding her too tight Lol) with the 2nd leg (she also had her 3rd Pneumococcal vaccine yesterday) but that aside she was fine. NO temp or rash or anything so far, but i'm keeping an eye on her.

We had a nice afternoon out in the sunshine afterwards, just wandering round thrift shops (my favourite! I'm the bargain queen ) and then a quick trip to Lidl, but she took it all in her stride and was cheerful.

She overslept so perhaps she was a bit more tired, but she's also about to cut a new tooth and that often seems to make her sleep longer.

THanks for all the stories people.
