My 2 and a half month old has high temp

My baby boy has had a high temp since last night. He was not himself yesterday, was a bit grizzly and sleepy, last night around 9pm DH noticed he was a bit warm and I took his temp which was 38.9. I gave him some panadol and his temp went down and he slept well last night with his temp staying down. It went up again this morning.
He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms, runny nose, cough etc. He still smiles and laughs, but does seem to want to be snuggled heaps (which I love), will sleep in my arms, but wake when I put him down.
If he is not getting a cold or flu (which I dont think he is) what other reason could he have a temp? I hate seeing him like this, it's really upsetting me. Do you think I should take him to the doctors (I am trying to avoid it, as it's really cold and windy outside), how long should I wait to take him to doctor?

If the panadol brings the temp down that's good - but if it rises again over that 24-hour period go to the docs. That's my rule of thumb. Or if he goes off his food or his wet nappies decrease.
    Good luck ...

Thanks kazbah, he is actually feeding really well, actually taking both boobies when most the time he normally only takes one, so thats a good thing I suppose.

    Hi Marlene,

keep in mind that a fever is the bodies natural way of fighting any bugs; so a fever alone should not be cause of concern... she says from hundred's of km's away

The fact he has no other symptoms is a good sign. Fever can be caused by many things, pain, illness etc. It may be that he has some movement in his gums which is causing discomfort... or he may be coming down with a cold. If the temp is not bothering him, let him fight it naturally and keep him cool (tepid water or let him go in shorts and a shirt... crazy idea in this kind of weather but it is fine to do).
Many health care professionals recomend seeking medical advice if a fever in an infant persists longer than 48hrs.

    HTH. Enjoy the cuddles!

A temperature in an under 3 month old is generally of concern for doctors so they usually recommend you take them in if the temp goes back up after one dose of panadol. I would definitely be booking in just to be on the safe side.

I have to agree with Nai. considering his age, any temp over 38 should be looked into. it doesnt mean that there is necessarily anything major going on, but best to be cautious. if he was over the 3 month mark and still feeding and playing, then i would wait and see, but being only 10 weeks old it can knock em about a bit.

    HTH.

Thanks girls, his temp is still going up an down, not up to 38 again though. I am taking him to the doctor now (have to drop DD to work anyway) just to get him checked out. Will let you know what the doc says when I get back.

Just got back from the doctor, of course when we got there his temp was normal. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong with him, ears, nose and throat all good. Didn't really give me any idea of what else could cause high temps, just told me to "keep up the panadol" Not even a warning of maximum doses per day or how many days is safe to have panadol, lucky I know all that stuff already.

So, I supppose I will just see if temp goes up again and take him back to doc if it does. Hopefully the high temp was doing its job and keeping some nasty infection or virus away, thats why I dont want to keep giving him panadol unless he really needs it.
