Don't have this problem but keeping his mouth busy with cold teething rings etc might help. Also you could put some bonjela on the sores. As well as an antiseptic to help them heal they also have a local anaesthetic so it might stop the cycle of sucking (eg. if he is doing it now because of the sores being sore or itchy) or make it less rewarding because of the lack of feeling.
