I wouldn't on a baby, I'd be worried they'd suck it off. I've put it on DD2 a couple of times, and DD1 likes hers to get done every couple of weeks. But she doesn't bite her nails.
They haven't bothered to eat the polish off, it usually wears off as they're crawling. DD2 thinks it is wonderful and shows off her toes to everyone by pointing and saying 'toes' with a big smile.
My mum does my DD's - she is 3.5yo. I can't remember what age she first did it, but my DD was over the putting her fingers & toes into her mouth. My DD loves her nails painted - always pink!
I wouldn't paint my babies toe nails either! But I have painted my 3 year olds as a special treat! and I've just bought her a tiny bottle of kid safe nail polish for christmas..just as something special! I'm not really a nail polish person and I only wear it for weddings etc, but I thought it could be like a 'dress up' thing for her.
I certainly wouldn't use adult nail polish on a baby...yuck..nasty
It's actually never even occured to me to paint my DD's toe nails. But like others have said, maybe your friend just did it for a bit of fun. And to give her the benefit of the doubt, one would think she wouldn't have done it if her baby was a toe sucker.
My dd1 loves nail polish it has to be all different bright colours :-) She has so much fun, I even let her do mummies :-) And DD2 comes and gets hers done now too :-)
I have only recently started painting DD1's nails but she was 3 in october and she absolutely loves it. I wouldn't do DD2's nails at her age (she's 8 months) and to be honest she wouldn't sit still long enough anyway. If she's interested when she's over 2 then i think its fine.
