    Night terrors

    Hi all.
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of night terrors (what age you generally get them, how to cope with them ect ect....)

I am concerned as my son who is 6 monts old starts screaming while he is sleeping and it is very hard to get him to calm down, i'm not even sure if i am supposed to try wake him. So if anyone can help me out i'll be very gratefull..

    Regards

    Matt

Alex started having them at 7 months old (which we were told was very rare to have them at such a young age) and continued till he was 14 months old. Most children if they have night terrors start around the 18 month mark.

There isnt much you can do unfortunately, just try and soothe them. The only advice I have is that if you notice a pattern emerging of your baby waking at a certain time eg 11pmish every night then wake them half an hour prior to that time to get them out of the sleep cycle IYKWIM? That should then hopefully stop the terror occurring.

    Good luck.

    thanks for the replies.
we have noticed a pattern and it's always around 11:45ish. we'll give waking him up ahead of that ago and see how it goes.

    Thanks again

My DD1 started them around 16 months.
She would wake screaming & was inconsoleable. I couldn't even touch her. All I could do was talk to her til she calmed down enough for me to cuddle her.
It lasted only a few months for us.

hey there, these are such horible things to have to deal with, my ds1 started them at around 3. i foud that there was definantly a pattern in when they will wake up and like ang said if you can wake them up .5hr befor then you can breake the pattern.

A night terror occours when bub is in between sleep cycles (light and deep sleep) and there is nothing you can do except give them a cuddle until it is over. They will not remeber what has happened.

I was told that stress and changes can be a trigger for night terrors (when ds started we had just had ds2) but i found with ds1 his biggest trigger is getting to hot in his sleep.

I hope this helps a little and if you have any Qs feel free to ask and ill help where i can

My DD started waking screaming at about 4 months old, she's 6 months old now and it's starting to ease. I'm not sure if they were night terrors or pain, I tend to think it was wind pain... I still don't know but she was unconsolable and I'd just pick her up and walk around patting her until she woke up.

It always happened at bedtime on and off from 7pm - 11pm. I think it happened in between sleep cycles when she wasn't in such a deep sleep.

Perhaps your DS is suffering from wind, growing pains, teething? I know we'll never know, my MCHN said bubs do suffer from growing pains because they're growing so rapidly their little bodies can ache, and when they're asleep their pain tolerence is lower (as is ours).

So I don't have an answer for you! Just try burping and give cuddles and reassurance if that works. Hope they stop soon for DS's sake and yours!

Thanks for all the great replies, it's been fantastic to see how many people care enough to reply to messages..

It has started to ease the last couple of nights so hopefully it will go altogether..
