    No poo?

I'm probably worried for nothing, but I figured it was best to check.....

Nicholas hasn't done a poo since Monday night. Prior to that he was doing one about every 36 hours or so. I know that BF babies can go a long time without pooing, but he has been a bit unsettled for the last couple of days and farting constantly! Could he be constipated? Or could it be that because from Monday he has only been having a top up after every second feed (instead of every feed) that has altered his 'routine' LOL?

We are BF every 2.5-5 hours, he has three top ups a day, one or two of which are formula. We're still getting plenty of wet nappies.

    TIA!

I would say that he's alright, I know my little man did that for a few days then got into a good routine of pooing more then once a day and his farts stank as well. He may just be using all the nutrients from the BM for a growth spurt and will start pooing normally soon.

Amanda's right. BF babies rarely get constipated since the BM is very efficient and there's not a lot of waste.

All the stinky farts are good it means he's working on the poo. He could be unsettled from the constant farting - its still a strange sensation for little ones

Ella didn't poo for 14 days! and when she did it took three nappy changes.

Unfortunately you might not know until he has a dirty nappy and you can see what it looks like, i.e. whether its hard etc.

I know how you feel I still freak out when Charly doesn't poo for a couple of days as she goes very day (just starting solid so is changing to every 2 to 3 days). Charly is a regular farter just like her dad. When she didn't go after a couple of day I would give her some boiled water, amazing how well it works, ever when is only a couple of mls.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds like a bit of wind pain. When Caleb went 8 days between poos (I wish now lol) he farted quite a bit like how you've described.

As long as when he finally does one it is soft. Usually when they go a few days the consistency changes from runny and mustard seed looking to that of smooth peanut butter but still quite soft. If it's hard, dry or little pebbles then it is constipation.

Thanks everyone! I guess I can only wait and see what happens. I'm sure he's saving it up and it will all come out at 3am one morning when I'm dead on my feet LOL!

I feel much better now, thank you

Alex was six weeks prem, a bit more than NIcholas, but was also breastfed.

He went twenty-one days without pooing at about two months old. I was quite concerned and took him to the MCHN and the doctor. THey said they wouldn't do anything until the 21 day mark, firstly because he was only breastfed, and secondly because he was prem and IUGR and was probably using all the nutrients in the BM.

At 4am on the 21st day, I went into his room for his normal feed, and without turning the lights on, I went to the laundry and ran the bath! (We were bathing him in the laundry tub at this stage). I had to change him, his jumpsuit, his blankets, the sheets, and the next morning I realised I needed to wash the wall... and the curtains too.

He did do a lot of farts etc during those three weeks, but it was the waiting that was the worst... and knowing that when it DID happen it was going to be like a volcanic eruption... nothing on Earth was going to stop it!

    Best wishes.
