Ds isnt circ'd and now is starting to retract the skin back himself..he is 3.5yrs
i guess i need to know if this is ok and what it will look like??(i get a bit freaked by it but he doesnt know that)
is this when i really have to start pushing the issues of cleaning it properly?

Let him play with it, it would be very unusual for him to hurt himself. Boys can retract the skin when they are somewhere between 3 – 5 years old. When he is able to fully retract the skin is the time to tell him why he needs to clean it and show him how to do it correctly.
I'm not of much help here BUT wanted add a little story ... When my nephew was about the same age i didn't know how to towel dry him down there after his bath ... interesting enough he told me i wasn't doing it like his Mum and dried himself ... i was amazed at how open he was about it ... and if anything i felt embarrassed that i didn't know how to go about it properly when i am the adult ... but he clearly knew how to look after himself there (obviously with the previous guidelines of his parents help) ...
I think Alan is so right in that your DS needs to explore and in hindsight then learn from you and/or DH at some point in how to clean, etc ...
we havent focused on penile cleaning because its only the skin that was moving previously so he can clean that easily by him self but once he can fully retract the skin then i guess that is when we will tell him he has to make sure its done.
also with the head will it be tender for a while while he is slowly retracting the foreskin back?
(we dont use soaps so not concerned about chemical harshness on the new skin)
Great thread..we're almost at the same stage with DS. But my question is...HOW do you clean it properly when he is retracting the skin? I haven't found any info on that...perhaps I should ask the child health nurse?
Im interested in this too, Im not sure if ds is doing it or not but I know hes been pulling ti as far forward as he can, cos when I asked him about it he said he was "hiding" his penis. I took him once to the drs for a suspected UTI (which he didnt have) and they said he had a "loose foreskin" so I, guessing it will be sooner rather than later.
Is it normal for them to get upset when they have an erection? DS gets quite upset about it.

Yes it is best to clean it when the skin is retracted with soap and water, this enables you wash away anything that has collected under the foreskin.

Some children do get upset about getting an erection. I’m not 100% sure why but I believe it to be related to body image. They are used to their penis being soft and flaccid then all of a sudden it becomes hard. They obviously do not know the reason for the change and it can cause them to become concerned. One reason for ‘hiding his penis’ could again be related to body image. He is used to seeing his penis with the foreskin covering the head, when the skin is retracted it looked different and therefore he pulls the foreskin forward to make it look “normal” again. This is only an educated guess and I may be completely wrong but it is something for you to consider.
