I was going to suggest something similar to MummyNaomi - so you can start him out at a lower level, but as he grows you can put shelves or drawers or even a little desk under the bed, and have the bed as a bunk bed.
DS's room is pretty small, so we were looking at options like that, but ended up deciding that it's cheaper to buy a $150 bed now, and a $550 bunk or bed/desk combo later, than a convertable one now ... so that's what we're doing
I thought of getting a bed very similar to the one mummynaomi shows but I wanted one that is going to last DD1 until she pretty much decides to move out or when she is able to buy herself her own double bed (we have small rooms so unless we move that wont be happening anyway). I don't know what the Ikea one is like but the one I looked at did not look strong enough. My loft bed I got from ebay and was $500 (brand new, complete with really hard to follow instructions) but is a Sydney company.
