My DD (one year old) has had a runny nose since Friday. I just assumed it was related to teething or possible mild hayfever as her eyes have been watering too. My DH and I are both prone to hayfever so that's why I thought this. Over the weekend she has got progressively worse, nose constantly running and eyes watery too. She's also been a bit irritable but generally feeding and sleeping okay.
Today we saw our paed and he saw how she was and didn't comment but as the day has gone on she has got even worse. Nose constantly running, and she had choked up phlemg several times. She now has a cough and seems to have slight temp. She has also been up a couple of times since going down.
Does this sound like an ordinary cold that we simply ride out or something else? I know that if she gets a fever that is high we will of course get her checked. Her nose isn't green at all - all clear. I think she is coughing because she has so much phlegm. My DH put some baby vix on her chest. I have her in my bed at moment - is this okay or should she be in her own bed? I don't want her to choke during night and we don't hear her. My DH is going to sleep in spare room.
Any other ideas to help her congestion or runny nose? The poor thing looks sooooo miserable and sounds terrible.
Could just be a common cold...if she gets worse or your concerned id take her the the GP....least then you have a small peace of mind JIC its something else.
When my girls are sick like that, i put them in my bed.
The general rule with snot and phlegm is that
If its yellow or clear it is usually a virus (ie a cold) and antibiotics will not work as they only work on bacterial infections
If its green usually it is a bacterial infection and a visit to your GP may help.
This is not 100%, but it usually the case and the more you can avoid getting antibiotics for a virus the better for your child as really you are giving them a treatment that is ineffective.
A tempreture is your bodies natural immune response to an infection, by raising the core tempreture it kills off many infections... of course you need to make sure that it doesnt get too high.
If you are concerned take her to see your Dr for piece of mind, but does sound like a cold to me... and i agree with Kimbaz, lots of rest and healthy food (and cuddles). When she is feeling better though take her out for a walk, my mum always use to say that when you are on the mend it helps blow the cobwebs away, and it always use to make us feel fresher and more clear.
HTH and i hope that Mackensie is feeling better soon
Well she slept with me and did okay - still coughing a lot this morning but nose still only clear. Will see how she goes today. She's just lying there so a nice quiet day seems to to be what the "doc" ordered. Thanks for your help!
Spoke too soon - she kept on sleeping this moring till about 11.15 which is good. Had her up and she won't feed, had a very green nappy and was basicaly hysterical the whole time she was up. She seemed to get warmer and warmer as he got herself worked up - gave her some panadol and she fell asleep in my arms. Has gone back down to bed without feed - boobs are huge! Booked into docs for 2pm so will see. Does this sound common?

Hi Jordie, has she been in contact with other kids? I've heard there's a cold virus going around that gives kids diarrhoea as well...
These days when Natty has a cold and then the fever comes, I take her to the doctors. The last time she had tonsilitis, and the time before that it was an ear infection. It's worth asking just to be sure. Particularly if you are worried. And do whatever you feel is right with the sleeping - you'll cop no judgement around here
I hope she's feeling much better soon.
Snacks could be right there. That cold virus went around Melb recently and the runs came with it. We all had it over a period of several weeks, one by one coming down with it for a few days to a week.
Well we went to docs - she has cold with congestion and middle ear infection. So we've got antibiotics for her. She's doing better now thogh after the nurofen which is a relief. We have to keep away from other bubs for next few days which is sooo hard - all my friends have kids!! I hate being isolated like that - oh well.
