Pierced Ears?

I am thinking i would REALLY like to get BOTH my girls ears pierced... DP says NO not until they are old enough to choose foe themselves

Have you had your LO's ears pierced and what were the pro's & con's of having them done around this age.

DD1 is 2 and DD2 is 10.5mths.

I was thinking it will be good now as it will be done and over with with little fuss and then they will just be used to them being in.
Am thinking i might ask DP's cousin to watch the girls while we go to a movie then sneakily ask her to go and get them pierced.. then DP can't say ANYTHING to me..

So what do you think?

i wanted them done for years though

I think they would find it hard to sleep on them for a while, that might put you off, they will touch them won't they and whinge?

Hopefully someone else has already had their girls done and can give better advice

I had mine done when I was 2, mum said I was fine and didn't play with them at all. I asked to have them done as big sister had them and apparently I wanted everything she had I don't remember

I have both my girls ears pierced. DD1 was done at 13 months & DD2 was done at 4 months.
DD1 cried for about 5 minutes after it was done & then only complained when we had to turn them.
She never touched them & they didn't bother her at all.
DD2 cried for about 30 secs & never complained again.

They never had trouble sleeping either

I personally think it's cute.

I had my ears pierced at 8 months old and my mum swears I coped just fine with it, both the pain of the initial piercing (which is no worse than a vaccination, probably even less because it's not pumping nasty stuff into muscle tissue!), and the healing period.
I took DD1 to get her ears pierced at around 16-17 months old and she did GREAT - got a surprised look on her face when they pulled the triggers, but then we showed her her new 'pretties' in a mirror and she went from 'ouch' to 'yaaaayyyyyy!!' in like two seconds The healing period was fine, too - she would touch them occasionally but for the most part, she forgot they were even there, but I had no worries cleaning them twice a day as she would sit patiently and let me soak her ears with saline (and that was a surprise considering how she's always got ants in her pants!). She loved her new earrings and was willing to help me look after them so she could show them off As far as sleeping on them etc, no worries as far as I know.

The only con I can think of when getting them done at this age, is that the placement can be a little tricky - because they're still growing, you should get the piercing positioned a little closer to theface than you would on an adult, itms? Like, just off-centre, toward the cheek, to allow for growing - I know lots of girls who had them done as babies/toddlers and they've had to get them repierced later in life as the piercing has ended up positioned on the outer edge of the lobe instead of the centre, itms? I took DD1 to the local hairdresser and they let me mark the spots so they were even, so that is an option for you, too, to make sure they get them just right

It's quick, relatively painless and I personally think little girls look gorgeous with tiny sparkly studs Just make sure to choose allergen-free jewellery (the Studex range available at chemists/Pricelines etc is great, and the posts are designed to be pretty kid-proof, unlike earrings bought from jewellers etc - they have a little groove that makes getting the backs off them quite difficult so you're not constantly searching for lost earrings!) in case their delicate skin reacts to certain metals and you're good to go! I always recommend saline solution for keeping them clean, as the alcohol-based sprays may be convenient but it's very drying on delicate skin and can promote infection rather than inhibiting it as it kills healing cells as well as harmful ones. Good luck with your decision, I don't regret mine and will be taking DD2 to get hers done soon, too

ETA: And yes, your DP has to be okay with this decision before you do it!! Ask him exactly why he wants them to wait until they're old enough, and go from there DH wasn't that keen on me getting DD1's ears pierced but he wasn't *against* the idea (he did say he would prefer to wait until she was older, but we talked about it and he said he wouldn't be angry if I got it done, he just didn't think it was 'necessary' and was worried about causing DD1 pain and trouble with healing), so we both had to present our 'arguments' for and against and eventually he decided it wasn't so bad, and I could take her to get it done if I was so adamant. Again, he isn't keen on DD2 getting hers done but after seeing how well DD1 went, he isn't really against it either because he saw just how complication-free it was for DD1 and knows I can look after piercings no worries. Maybe try talking to him about why he's so against it and go from there? Good luck

I've gone back and forth on getting DD's done. In the end I waited, she's asked for them done recently and I explained to her what would happen/how they are done and she doesn't want them done yet.

Personally I would NEVR EVER get them done with a "gun" and when she's ready it will be done with a needle by a piercer I trust. Those gun studs are blunt and can cause a lot of damage to the tissue, they are also impossible to sterilise.

I like ear piercing on little girls - I myself had mine done when I was two. BUT I don't like your plan. I think that unless you can agree on this issue, it would be a gross breach of trust to get it done behind your DH back, and absolutely not on to drag a third party into your scheming.

Aside from that, some of the drawbacks of getting them done so young (and it is hard to find many reputatble places that will do them so young, and definitely not without a parent present and giving consent):
* the inital pain - although this does go away, different kids have different thresholds.
* maintaining - this can be painful, and needs to be done regularly: alot of younger kids won't co-operate with the steralising and turning the earings etc.
* I 'lost' my earings ALL the time as a young child and it was always such a huge drama to get new ones put back in, in case the hole closes over.

I had to wait till 12, 2nd hole 16 and at 18 decided didnt want them anymore and closed up. I personally wouldn't get a DD if I had 1 done until they wanted but I have no issue with kids and earings! But DO NOT agree with you doing it behind your DH back, if you can't agree it shouldnt be done.

My sisters ex partner and his mother took my niece when she was 8 months and got her ears pierced behind my sisters back.
It caused murder tbh.
She kept them in and they do look adorable but Laura would have waited until Anaiis was older.
I think speak to your dh and discuss it 1st.
I had mine done at 2 and I don't wear earrings much anymore but they are still open so I can put them in whenever. xx

both my DDs where done before they where 4 months and we have no problems at all. DD1 has just started to ask for different earings in as she has had plain sleepers in for ages but now wants ones like mine
DH took both girls in whilst I hid in the shop next door and both times the girls where fine by the time he came into me

i had mine done when i was 3 i think, i dont wear any now, but always had them in.
my sister got hers done at 9 months i think she was, i remember her crying for a little bit loke 10 secconds, mum gave her a doughnut and she was fine, if they have sleepers in it wont annoy them at night.
i remember having my nose done at 11, my step dad was against it, but once it was done, he didnt say much after that, (my sister is now 12 and wants hers done, he went APE! so she hasnt got one yet)

i dunno...i'll go against the grain here & say i don't really like it on little kids (i've seen little girls & boys with it done). my mum asked me to wait until i'd finished school & i did - i wasn't really into piercing before then & my school was really strict on what sort of earrings you could have. i have no problem with piercings in general - i have 7 ear piercings & have retired another 4 body/ear piercings in the last couple of years.

i know it's tempting wouldn't do it behind your DP's back, i reckon it'd just cause unecessary stress!

I'm also against the grain, but tbh, I think it's tacky. I had mine done when I was 6. Is there any harm in waiting a few years?

And if I did something like piercing behind my DH's back he'd be devastated, especially if he'd expressed an opinion against it.

I've been pierced with a gun and also with needles. Let me say needles hurt SO MUCH MORE!!! I much prefer the gun because it's quick and the pain disappears quickly, too. When you get it "pierced" with needles they stick the needle in you first, then pull it out and then put the stud in! Ohhh the agony! With the gun they shoot in the stud straight away, so once it's in you don't have to fiddle around with it for a while.

I had my ears pierced when I was 3 or 4. It didn't really hurt me. But personally I would wait until they ask to get it done. That way they won't be unhappy about it later on IYKWIM.

Thanks everyone.. i think, mine were done before i was 1, i remember mum saying it didn't bother me at all.
I guess i can talk to DP and maybe suggest we get them done after DD2's birthday.
DD1 is very into her necklaces and things and has been playing with my earrings so he might change his mind

Sorry but disagree completely in my experience (multiple body/ear piercings) the gun hurts more and takes longer to heal, there is also the noise from it which can scare some kids. The person operating the gun is usually under trained and has no idea about proper placement.

oh and I forgot, the needle they use should be hollow so once pushed through the earring will be inserted into the needle and pulled through as the needle is withdrawn.

My mum has 3 girls. She waited for us to ask her to get them.
I asked to get mine done when i was 6. I remember it hurt, i cried for a few minutes after, but also remember walking out and feeling like I was carrying massive rocks from my ears. If i have a daughter I tihnk i'll be waiting for her to make the decision.
My sisters didnt end up getting theirs done til they were 19 and 21!

i got baby charlies done at 2.5 months old and they used 2 guns was no problem and id prefer to have them done early as she has never played with them,never an infection..no probs she did cry a bit not to long though and i think they look beautiful. heres a few pics if you like hun.
