We didnt give our DS a pillow untill he was 2 1/2, I think that was probable late but he never wanted one and I never thought he needed it. He still only now he is 3 has the flattest of pillows. I think it is personal preference, but not sure about when he is in the cot or for sleeping better? sorry not much help
