a question about solids and poo

I started doing BLS with DS sporadically from 6 months and in the past few days I've started making solids a little more regular and he has a bit of food each day maybe a piece fruit or vegetable and small bit of toast or a corn thin and now he hasn't pooed in 3 days...is this normal? Before this introducing of a regular meal he would do one big gross poo and maybe another each day....now nothing. He is fully breastfed. Should I be worried?

Oh and I should add he still has plenty of wet nappies.

a lot of BF babies will end up not having a dirty nappy for up to a week or more when exclusively on BM, and can go longer once solids start. DD has started solids similarly to your DS - and today was the first proper dirty nappy in about a week (i try not to keep track or it does my head in!) - the GP i spoke to last week said it's pretty normal to go that long, can get a bit worse with solids - and to perhaps introduce some boiled prunes with a bit of water and a small amount of brown sugar if you want to get things moving. we're just going with the flow at the moment. i can't see me giving her prunes simply cos it's not something we regularly have in the house here and town is too far to go to get them if needed - but we're giving her pears and other fruit to try to get things moving...

DD was rather uncomfy yesterday and did a small poo last night - and then a mammoth one this morning. we're doing tummy massage (clockwise) and as much bicycling with her legs as we can to try and keep her little tum working...

not that it is helpful much, but wanted to let you know our experiences...

    thanks for the quick reply
    it was very helpful!
I wasn't sure if he was supposed to poo more or less when solids are introduced. I'm not looking forward to the state of his nappy when he eventually does poo...hopefully it's in the morning as DH always does the first nappy change of the day

i was hoping that - she did a "scout for the main party" dirty nappy last night - and DH copped that one - he whinged at it - OMG - he should have seen the scary scary one this morning! it was huuuuuge!

Prune juice is good to get things moving as well (just dilute it in some cooled boiled water)

I found our DS got a bit bunged up when we started solids (he was BF then too) and the CYH nurse suggested lots of orange coloured vegies/fruits to help - eg pumpkin, peaches, apricots etc

Sounds normal. My DS has been on solids for 4 months now, and he still doesn't poo every day!

DS had a few issues when we began solids too. I made up some prunes and I add it to fruit each day for him. Works a treat. PM me if you want the reciepe.

BTW - I only added prunes to his diet as he was really straining and it seemed to be really hurting him. If your LO is not in any pain then I wouldn't worry. All bubs are different. HTH

It really comes down to what the poo is like when it comes. If it's soft, then there's no constipation and no need to do anything.

If it's hard pellets, then it's constipation. If it's constipation the first thing I would do is try giving more fluids - if he is drinking less since starting solids then it might be worth dropping back the solids a bit and trying to get him to drink more. Or you could try introducing some water in a sippy cup. If that still doesn't help then you might like to think about introducing sultanas, prunes or pear juice - but this wouldn't be my first option.

    How does that sounds?

Have you been giving him banana? In my experience and from what several of my friends have experienced, banana can cause constipation if it's eaten too often.
As Mantaray said, if the poo eventually comes out as normal and mushy then is isn't a problem, but if it's like pellets then it's constipation.
