I have read that you can give low fat milk to children that are over 2. But I'm not sure why.
Due to the flood crisis that happened up here last week our shops have been fairly bare(we are on the Gold Coast - so not directly affected by the water, but obviously affected in other ways). So when I did grocery shopping yesterday the only milk left was lite milk (98.5% fat free). So I bought it...cause we needed milk (had only a mouthful left at home). I also bought a strawberry milk (also the only ones left).
So I thought I'd read somewhere that you shouldn't give low fat milks to toddlers and babies...is that right???
If not why not???
Is it alright to give it if it is the only milk I could buy (even the long life milk shelves were empty...except for the low fat stuff too)???
If not...what if its just a little bit in their breakfast or other meals?
My DH will try to get some normal milk on his way home from work today or tomorrow- but until then is this milk ok for now? My DS's love their milk (even DS2 almost 1 has begun his transition to cows milk...and loves it).
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Im pretty sure it has something to do with the calcium.....dunno what but. DD is on half and half atm (formula & cows milk) and she has cows milk on cereal, porridle etc. Afew times i have run out of full cream and had to give her Hilo milk :s I didnt see any noticable problems like weird poos or anything. But I think if its just for today he should be okay....
Sorry I couldnt be more help!![]()
Low fat milk will be fine as a temporary thing. They say not to give children under 2 low fat milk as they need the extra fat in their diet, not because the low fat will hurt them.
Low fat is fine for kids over 2 and occasionally for under 2- they just recommend that it not be used as the only milk in their diet. Under 2's need the full fat but every now and again is fine.
