dont let anyone make you doubt yourself EVER!!! they recoment introdusing solids at 6 months, but it is entierly up to the parent, you yourself will KNOW when YOUR CHILD is ready, just because hers were (im assuming she has a child?) dosent mean your dd will be ready at the same time to!
for what its worth, my dd is 10 months old and still isnt all that keen on water, only the last month have i got her to have even so much as more then a sip! befor then, she would realise its not milk and throw the bottle/sippy cup and scream at me for her milk!!!
remember all children do things and are ready for things at THERE OWN PACE! no one elses!!

My little missy didn't take to solids until she was 8 months old, we tried from 6 months but she just wasn't interested. Let me tell you at two & a half she has no eating issues or allergies.

You know your baby best, if you think she's not ready then you're right. That is unless she's 15 & still not on solids

OMG, really??!!! No way would I be giving my 4 month old 2 meals a day! Well actually, I don't even give mine one meal! DD2 has only just started having juice, and she's 2.5 yrs old. I would never give juice to a baby. So wrong.

new mum or old mum.....we are all doing our best. Do what you feel is right....listen to your SIL but you dont have to agree or follow through with her advice.

My DD was 5.5 months and DS was 6 months, both when they were ready.....

oh and FWIW....there is a reason they call it Toddler juice.....your LO definitely is not one!

My DD is still disinterested in solids and you can see from my ticker she is 8 months old.

Their wee tummies aren't quite ready for it yet mate, just you listen to your instincts and not that SIL!

Just want to point out that another great advantage of waiting til bub is ready for solids (and usually Ive found its around 7-8mths) is that you can give them food you prepare instead of that jar stuff. Only my Ds1 had jar food and that was for maybe 2 months from 6-8mths of age and then I thought how silly it is we trust jar foods full of preservatives over food we prepare ourself that in my family's case has barely if any processed foods involved. My other two were then fed "normal" food in an appropriate form for their development (ie mashed, then chunks then so on) with not a puree or jar in sight.

They are eating machines at 4, 3 and almost 2; they eat 99% of what I put in front of them and let me tell you, we are quite varied in our diet. No allergies either (and I have food allergies myself).

i think you've got the idea that it's a big NO to needing solids at 4 months but i just wanted to pop in & say don't doubt yourself....trust that you know what you're doing. it is hard to trust yourself sometimes & there is a little voice in your head that tells you as a first time mum you should listen to others (or is that just me? :lol) but you're doing exactly the right thing.

in fact, you can totally spin your SIL out in a couple of months by skipping rice cereal altogether & going straight to some steamed vegies. that'll be sure to leave her speechless

So what changed babe? I saw on FB Miss K had a full bowl of rice cereal and SIL commented on it (although not sure if it was the correct SIL), was it because you felt pressured or what?

I did what i had planned all along. I was waiting for when Kailey was ready. I tried to give her two bottles today and she wasn't interested and i remembered i bought some rice cereal and i made it up and she took it straight away. I made up 2 tablespoons full mixed with her formula not thinking she would have it all and she did. She has been very happy all afternoon since.

I wasn't pressured, i went along with Kailey and i'm so very proud of her

But you said she wouldn't have the 2 bottles you tried giving her. Has she had any formula today?
If not, rice cereal should not be the next option, sorry. She needs the formula first every time, wheather she's 4 months or 11 months. It is more important... no matter what...

Her bottles are formula. I attempted to give her 2 bottles and she wouldn't have them. She went 5 hours without having anything and i didnt want her to go hungry. It was a last resort. I didn't expect her to take it but she seemed very interested in it, waving her arms in excitement and wanted more and more. I went along with her i didnt force it.

Just keep in mind that her milk comes first, then solids. And it should be like that until 12 months of age. Solids for under 1 year olds is mainly for experimenting with. You don't want to start giving her solids before a bottle, she'll fill up and won't want her bottle then.

So much conflicting advice, and then your baby is only known by you!

Keep in mind though that babies do tend to have a fussy period around 4 months of age, which a lot of people think is to do with solids - but its a common thing at their age to refuse milk. All mine have done it to me. Sometimes its fixed within a day, or sometimes its a sign that they want longer between their bottles than before - but they will never starve because they've missed a couple of bottles. I doubt she would let you if she's anything like my kids - they let me know when they want milk! LOL

Rice cereal is very commonly used a first food, but nutritionally it's not a good choice, especially if it's replacing formula which is the most important source of nutrition until around the 12 month mark. 5 hours is a long time for a baby of that age to go without a drink - how has her drinking been since?

She normally feeds really well. I was just worried that she hadnt had anything in 5 hours so i just wanted something in her belly. I will continue feeding her as normal and throw in some rice cereal if she is being fussy. She is 5 days off 5 months so i think im doing pretty well.

i will never replace her bottles with formula but fill in gaps where she doesnt want a bottle.

Ahh okay Just wanted to make sure you weren't pressured into anything. Wow go Kailey, 3 days ago you didn't think she was ready and now she is, big turn around I can't believe she's almost 5 months, goes so fast!
