I went to the toilet and left Harlee in the middle of the bed with pillows either side of her like I do every morning.. And as I was in the loo I heard a thud.
One of my fears had come true. She fell off the bed and starting screaming. There is a big red mark on her head.. Ia now turning blue.
So I take her to the hospital or is that ott? Ive been known to be at the doctor for the smallest things, but I'm bawling my eyes out with her and I just dont know what to do anymore
hey hun, its horrible when stuff like that happens isn't it
What sort of surface did she hit her head on?
I suggest you put a cold washer on the area for a while. Keep an eye on her for signs of concussion: vomitting, eyes rolling back, getting very sleepy... etc and also make sure the bump hasn't gone inwards, if it has, I would take her straight to the hospital.
Maybe give the hospital a call for extra reassurance.. im sure she is fine..
DS fell of a beanbag at 5 months old....
DS also fell of the bed at 6.5 months and eight months
he is fine.... No brain damage though it scares the bejeebas out of you doesn't it?
it will bruise...but the good thing is she cried straight away. it's when they don't cry straight away that you should freak out
if she's crying thats a good thing.
both my boys have done it.
DJ- off the bed at 7months. off the couch - too many times to count (mainly since being able to get up there himself) also down two steps at a friends place.
Vic- off the couch onto floor boards. off the bed - landing on his bum once and head once.
as long as she is awake and happy she'll be ok. if she starts throwing up/acting sleepy (when she's not normaly due to for a sleep) then pop down to the doctors. they get a massive shock when they ground comes up to play with them
hope you're ok though
Thank you so much everyone for the reassurance. the bruise on her head looks so bad, and I feel terrible. I'm always so scared something like this would happen, but I think I am more upset than her
Our bed is quite high, and we have floor boards, but there is a rug under the bed so she hit that.
I think this is a reminder to baby proof our house, she's crawling and pulling herself up on everything now, she's too mobile! I'm paranoid!
Oh its so scary hun isnt...DS1 fell out of bed so many times...the when DS2 came along I always made him go backwards off the bed from when he was pulling himself up and he has not fallen off yet *touchwood*
Hope she is ok And a big hug to you too x
When they fall off something you feel just terrible.. both my DS3 and DD fell out of their baby swing at 1 week because I didn't think they needed to be strapped in.. woops.
Something I was told when my DS2 had a nasty fall from a scooter. He had the hugest egg you have ever seen and we were freaking out but we were at a rellies place and one was a nurse and she checked him over and then told us if there is a bump then it means its superficial or something like that? if they bump their heads (hard) and there is no bump then they need to see a DR otherwise it could mean the bump is on the inside. hope that makes sense..
I am sure bub will be fine but if you are concerned but don't want to go to the Drs give them a call and ask to speak to the nurse..
I just had a huge scare last week myself! Elijah fell from the stairs and seriously just about knocked himself out. (there's a boohoo thread).... he was dazed (that's what the doc said) and eyes rolled a bit and he was a bit floppy... they were signs to check him out and I took him to my GP. I tell you though, that sound and then the crying... doesn't it just make your heart stop and jump into your throat!
I hope she's feeling better and you are too.... you're right though, probably scared you more than it did her.
My DH put our 6 week old DD on the edge of the bed and she fell off. She started screaming and had a big red mark as well. She's now 3 1/2 and fine. Take her to the doctor if she isnt feeding/ doesnt settle down, try to keep her awake for awhile to monitor her. Im sure she will be fine There will be so many times when things like this will happen even with the best intentions, its just a learning curve and accidents happen no matter how careful you are as well. Dont beat yourself up, youve got the rest of her life to do that so save your energy!!
Hun, I'm sorry this happened to your DD, but like pretty much everyone else have said, it does happen! Just the other day my 11 month old rolly polly (just started commando crawling a few days ago) almost rolled off the bed. Now, I wasn't in the toilet or anywhere else, I was on the bed with him and he was quick as lighting and did 3 rolls all at once and if I didn't grab him by the clothes on his chest he would have fallen off. Now, this is for the mother of the year award......I was in China in November last year so DS was 8 months old and I tripped on the pavement while holding DS and I fell with all my weight forward and DS hit his head on the concrete. Luckily the arm that was holding him protected him somewhat, but I still heard the thud and my heart stopped. He cried straight away for only a minute, but there was never a bump there, just a red spot. I watched him all that day and he seemed happy enough, but I kick myself now for not taking him to the doc just so he/she could check him over. My DF said he looked fine so probably was fine. I still think about it and wonder if I didn't cause any damage inside. He has been noramal after wards, so I try not to worry too much. Big hugs hun and give your little one a hug xxx
