    sick all the time

my 11 month old DD is sick all the time!! she has had a cold on and off for the majority of the last 2 months! she was on antibiotics for an upper respiritorary tract infection then three weeks later antibiotics for a throat infection. i just finished the second antibitotics and two days later she now has another high temperatutre! what the heck is going on here? is it normal for her to be sick so much? there was aboy who died from the flu in brisbane and i am now scared that this is or could happen to my DD! i have been to the doctor a million times in the last 2 months and i dont know whether i should take her back again, she was just there 4 days ago with conjuncivitis!

here are some qns about the flu:
    1. is this strain of deadly flu likely to kill every child who gets it or did it somehow just affect that poor boy in the most extreme way?
    2. was it the flu that kills or a secondary thing such as dehydration, etc?
    3. what if your baby has a temp but is eating and drinking well and happily playing (but has nasal discharge and cough) should we see doc for that?

i am probably being a paranoid mother!!!! i wish it would just hurry up and be summer!

I think it's better to be paranoid, than not to be.
From what I've read about that deadly flu, if you're child has a fever, flu symptoms & is lathargic then they need to be seen straight away.
Are you able to call your nearest hospital/dr or 13health (or whatever it is) and ask them.
In winter, some children do get sick more often.
I do hope she gets better soon, and keep us updated.

i'm sorry i dont really have any advice but thought you may be comforted to know that my DD went through a similar thing. from about 10-14months she had tonsiitis and ear infections etc non stop and went through 5 or 6 courses of antibiotics. one would clear up and then within a week another high temp etc. she is now 16 months and has been HH for the last 2 months. good luck its not nice when they are consistently unwell. i got to the point of not wanteing to tell ppl she was poorly as i'd get the response she's always got something wrong!! i dont live in bris so dont know much about the strain of flu that is going around but its better to be safe than sorry keep persisting at the dr's.
hugs to you and your DD

    Hi Hollo

the 'flu' that killed those kiddies in Perth and the latest one in Brisbane was a combination of the influenza A virus and a streptococcal infection. This lead to a development of a severe pneumonia that developed rapidly and was not responsive to traditional antibiotics. The medical fraternity are still not sure why this combination has proved so deadly this year.

The symptoms you need to worry about are sudden high temps, listless with flu like symtoms.

If your gorgeous girl is still happy, eating and drinking you have nothing to worry about. Keep a close eye on her and if she deteriorates trust your mummy instincts and get medical attention. Little ones do go thru a period around 12 months of seeming to catche everything going around...this is how they build up their immune system.

You are not being paranoid...just an attentive and loving mummy

    I agree with yogababy.

If she is happily playing, eating and drinking, then thats a good sign! But definitely keep your eye on her to see if she gets any worse.
However, if her temp doesn't come down with panadol, and stays high for much longer I would probably advise to go and see someone....

*hugs* Hope she is feeling better soon!

Hi there, my DS was picking up many colds earlier in the year when he started going to playgroup for the first time. After enduring several colds one after the other and throat infections etc I saw a naturopath for advice on building up his immune system. She gave me a probiotic from Metagenics called Flora Care for Kids. He hasn't been sick since we started this. Might be something to consider. If you have a health food store near you that has a Naturopath on staff they can probably get it for you. Good luck!

Before Jett had his grommets put in he had 7 ear infections in 7 months. He was always getting colds and was never "really" well. As I work in a Pharmacy I was chatting to a rep and they suggested that I try Inner Health Plus.
Inner health for Kids, it helps maintain the intestinal microbiological balance of the body, promoting and assisting general health and wellbeing.
    Therapeutic applications:
    * To support healthy intestinal flora.
    * Aids in the maintenance of healthy immune function in children.
    * Bifidobacterim is lower in infants born via Caesarean section compared to infants born vaginally.
    * Bifidobacteria may be helpful in reducing the severity and incidence of diarrhoea in formula fed infants and children.
Hollo I hope DD get better very soon, and I agree with yogababy, you are a very caring and loving Mummy.

thanks everyone! well i succumbed to my paranoia and took her to the emergency department at 11:30 friday night cause her temp was 39.5 and i was thinking i wont be able to live with myself if something bad happens and i havent had her checked out! you should have seen how many people where there! anway, the doc there said the same thing as the other docs, that there are something like 60 viruses and she just keeps picking up new ones. i have decided that i will keep her away from child care for a couple of weeks and then at least give her a break from the sickness! even though i felt a little silly at taking her there i did feel a lot better about having confirmation that she was alright! thanks again. i will definatly as the GP about inner health plus for kids!

That's good news that she doesn't have anything serious at least. Probably a good thing keeping her away from daycare, or others kids in general.
