I didn't use socks or mittens with DD, but it was a very hot summer that year and she was wrapped when sleeping anyway. I guess it depends on how cool it gets at night and how much you use aircon. Just remember that even if there feet and hands are cool, as long as their body feels warm, they're fine.
I always go by the old saying "babies wear what you wear plus 1" So if I had a T-shirt on DD wore a singlet onesie and a tshirt.
Depending on how hot the night was she still wore a bodysuit and was wrapped in a muslin wrap. The summer she was born was that really awful hot summer 2009 too.
Blixie - it depends on if you are planning on using the bodysuits or not. you probably wouldn't need socks WITH a bodysuit unless the night was particularly cool and even then you'd probably throw a blankie or something over the lower body.
Lolpigs - if you are planning on wrapping your baby you won't need mittens. Personally I preferred to cut DD finger nails than use mittens afterall they are really only to stop the baby from scratching their faces and when I did use them they were pretty annoying coz they always fell off. I ended up going with the Bonds cozycuff bodysuits even though they are a bit more exxy, because you could fold over the hands or unfold the feet.
We live in a really hot environment but have aircon on at all times through summer so we still used long onsie's for DS2 and he was a Dec bub. But if we were going outside or something it was a short sleeved suits or nappy and singlet.
