My DD started this at about 11mths old too. At this time i ignored it and she soon stopped. She did start it up again 6-8mths down the track and then I would tell her no, which made her stop.
I think it has to do with exploring. They have teeth and they can make a great (not!) noise. It's all a part of growing up.
So I would try telling them no when they do it, or if your happy to ingore it then do that. It will pass soon
My DS started this at around the same age, and I asked the day care ladies why they did it. They said it was because of teething and the vibrations helped any pain or anything they were feeling.
Don't know how true it is, but he stopped doing it shortly afterwards and hasn't started up again.
DS started to do this at about 8 months when his bottom teeth came through. It drove me nuts I couldn't stand the noise. I just distracted him when he started doing it. Gave him a toy he could put in his mouth and he doesn't do it anymore.
Just exploration of a new body part I think. The new toy he has found is his willy but that is a whole different story (lol)
its quiet common for kids to grind teeth, theres not much you can do about it and as long as they stop by the time the adult teeth come through then theres nothing to worry about!!
