terrible two's in a one yr old!??

Hi everyone..I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem...My one yr old son has started throwing little tantrums. An example is when Im drinking something - he wants some too, but I say NO and he then screams and thrashes about a little bit (he does have his own cup, prefers mine).
Its the same thing for other items too. He hates the high chair - prefers to sit on my lap (where he doesnt actually sit, its more a struggle to make him sit).
Also he has started to climb the furniture! I have two older children but they never threw tantrums like this little boy is doing and they never climbed the furniture either.
I dont know if its just because he sees the rest of the family doing things hes trying to also???

He may just be an early developer . Don't worry too much. They start to tantrum when they want to distinguish themselves as a separate person to you. It is very healthy. Our DS had tantrums from this age. The best thing you can do is to set clear but reasonable rules with logical follow through if he tends to push the boundaries. Don't have too many rules (make everything as toddler proof as possible) and offer comfort when he works himself up into a tantrum. He is just expressing that overwhelming feeling of powerlessness when he doesn't get his own way. He will learn to deal with those feelings as he gets older but it helps knowing that you still love him even if he can't get what he wants at the time (eg. the 10th bikkie, climb the curtains, pull the cats tail. lol). And cuddles or you just being near helps him to learn that he will recover from disappointments. I think for sure it must be harder for the younger ones to see their older siblings being allowed to do something and not understanding why they can't.
Oh the joys of toddlers hey?

I'm cheating and copying another post I just wrote a second ago...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*sigh* Right here with you hun.... Tanty, tanty, tanty. Going to eat breakfast? Tanty. Wiping his face? Tanty. Changing his nappy? Tanty. Brushing his hair? Tanty. You get the idea.

Some days are worse than others. Today was a bad one. But I live in hope that tomorrow will be better ....

LoriRae I could have written that exact post.

I had a particulary unpleasant day with Flynn. He has seemingliy decided that he doesn't need naps during the day anymore (egads! the screaming...). Just what i need being 30 weeks pg! He was also being mummy's big helper while I was hanging out the washing (inside on clothes horses cos of the cruddy weather). That pretty well meant if I put it on he would kindly remove it for me...Don't touch please...screaming etc, etc, etc.
    AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!

I am hoping that he is getting it all out of his system and we will have a delightful 2 year old...I'm not very optimistic about this tho!

GL, you are not alone (if that makes you feel any better )

terrible twos in a one yr old?

Hi guys thanks for the feed back...
Its pretty much what i had been thinking - that hes just making the break into his own little person, I just wish he could do it without the screaming!

My 14 month old does this too. She wants everything and knows what she's not meant to have and will do things she knows she's not meant to do and then look at us to see what we'll do, then throws tantrums if we tell her off or take the thing away.

i don't think i could sum it all up any better than Krysalyss. My ds is definately going through this too and has tantrums at the smallest things, BUT they only last about 30 seconds because i make sure i am there to offer him cuddles and to also offer an alternative to what he wants to do (for example, "no you can't jump off the couch, but lets jump together on the ground where its safe" etc).

I find for my friends who get frustrated with their kids when they throw tantrums, it is alot worse than it should be, the more the parent shows anger towards their kids when they have trantrums the worse the child reacts, so it is much better to stay calm and help them through it.

Just remember, you're not alone we are always here if you need to vent and the tantrums won't last forever, it is just part of them growing up.

DD started it at age 1 also. Sorry to say but she is 4.5 now and they still continue and get worse each year that goes by!
