Three month old sensitive to perfume?

My DD is three months old, and lately whenever she is picked up by family or friends she cries and cries really hard, and won't settle until I take her and it takes quite some time to calm her down. I was starting to think she hated people , until I put some perfume on for the first time in ages yesterday and she did the same uncontrollable crying. So it clicked that perhaps she is sensitive to the strong fragrance in perfume. All of the people she cried with wear perfume. Anyone else had experience with this?

It's possible - newborns are very much programmed to recognise their mother's scent, so anything (or anyone) that smells different might be upsetting for her.

Oh yeah....my mum wears a lot of perfume and Grace used to scream scream everytime she picked her up. We worked out what it was when we noticed the pattern of perfume on people..got my mum to stop wearing perfume when around Grace and amazingly she didn't cry anymore. So I would say that there is a good chance that is the problem. It makes sense though...people tend to spray perfume on or around their neck and then that is where babies faces get put when they are held..they probably can't breath! Hope it all settles down with no perfume!

Is perfume a volatile organic compound (VOC)? Some children have really marked reactions to these

I kind of hope she is sensitive to perfume and just doesn't hate anyone holding her but mummy and daddy?!

I clicked onto that when Mason was about 6 weeks old. It was like he was a different child after I had my shower so I also started using a milder soap too.

I have the same problem, if I use any perfume, or use a different soap, she screams and a few times I put perfume on she's actually violently vomited all over me (yes, very nice when we're all ready to go out!). I thoguht she just hated my soap and perfume, but maybe its also because she can't smell 'me'...

Not sure about your baby, but I am allergic to perfume. can't wear it and cant' be near it, maybe it's an allergy or sensitivity. After all it's so strong and not exactly healthy for a bub. Could be the prob?? xo
