Question What do you think ? Bell's Palsy.

OK so I know I'm up to child number 5, and I have dealt with most things from my kids. But Tehya has me stumped.

A month or 2 back she started to blink weird, kind of like 3 or 4 squinty blinks in a row, I asked her if her eyes were sore or if she was tired, always the answer was no. Preschool mentioned it to me also (at the xmas party) and asked if I'd had her eyes checked ( i haven't as yet)anyways, this seemes to have stopped as suddenly as it started.

I was starting to worry it might be a tic of some kind.

Now in the last few days she has started to talk out of her right side of her mouth, her right eye doing long slow blinks, atleast enough to notice it diff to her left eye. Her mouth goes back straight when she's not talking, and I have even tried holding her lip in the middle. LOL. But the minute she goes to talk, the upper lip goes crooked and to the right and she talks that way.

So I am wondering does anyone have any ideas what it is, or why she is doing it ? I don't think it is something major (ie health related) as that would give weakness all the time and not just when she speaks.

Not sure what I really want, just putting it out there and seeing if anyone has advice for me.

I really don't want this to become a habit for her.

well i would get it checked to be sure. About 7 months ago my 10 year old 9 at the time started blinking heaps while concentrating like tv or when chatting to you. I took her to be tested and they said she is fine its attention seeking thats all after a talk with her it all stopped. But i would check it out betetr safe than sorry IYKWIM good luck.

I can't really help but to suggest that...

    a) it's probably nothing too serious / a strange habit she will get over / a sensation that she enjoys - MOST LIKELY OPTIONS

    b) it could have a neurological basis and is worth watching and talking to yr GP / Pead about. Speech does come from several quite specific parts of the brain and can be affected without any other functioning being affected. Please don't be alarmed by me writing this. It's just a thought that comes from a Psych that tends to read 'psychy' things into everything!

    Hi

It could be your little one just working out how all her muscles work, but if you are worried or it continues get it checked out.

There are certain movement disorders, that are neurological in nature, where symptoms can occur with active movement (and be absent at other times) or have other triggers (lights/noise/??) where the movement is not always there.

    take care,

TBH I would be feeling a bit concerned as well. It does sound a bit neurological, but just because it sounds that way, there can be other reasons as well.

Matilda drags her right foot. I didn't even notice that she has right sided slowness until she had a physio assessment. I was shocked but they also said that it can be normal at this age to do that. Their brain is doing so much. We have to practice doing symmetrical things like catching a ball and jumping etc... not throwing or kicking unless we practice doing it on the Right. After the assessment I went home and checked her shoes and yep... all the right toes were worn, and she had no right big toenail!! Its been worn off.

I was told that it could be a sign of other issues, or just something on its own.

Oh Wow Christy, I think sometimes when we are spending every day with them we might miss these kind of things and it takes an outsider to let us know. I think Tehya's preschool thought the same for us, they actually asked if we had noticed the blinking. Of course now she's on holidays I can't ask them if they have noticed the crooked mouth.

Thanks for your replies girls. I will keep an eye on it and if it continues after Christmas will get her checked out for sure.

I have decided to get Tehya to the Dr's sooner rather than later and she has an appt today.

She is seeming to dribble more, almost like she can't swallow her spit, and she had issues eating her weetbix this morning.

The more we think about it and the more people and google I look at it seems tobe pointing to Bells Palsy. Hoping the Dr can give me some answers today.
