Well I think around this age Cooper had picked up a comforter which was a shirt that I wore, so this helped him. You could try to introduce something like this for him.
I was told to try a few different things, some said to wean him off it slowly, but others said to just do it cold turkey, which I thought might be cruel, but that is what I went with in the end. I think if you try to wean it off him, it could prolong the inevitable. I remember the first night it was a bit of nightmare, the second night wasn't that bad and then every night got better. But remember, if you decide to go cold turkey, DON'T give in a few days later, if you feel that he isn't coping well. That would be more cruel, because it would confuse him. Also remember every baby is different, he may adjust quicker or it may take him longer.
The advantage you have, he is younger than Cooper was, so fingers cross, he could very well adjust better.
I say just go for it, persist, don't give in, be prepared for it to be hard, but you will be so much happier in the end.
Please let me know how you go - I know it was a difficult time for me, but you will be ok
